Course

1
Objectives
At the end of the module the participant will be able to:

• Understand the user and operator expectations

• Discuss the future of wireless communications.

• Understand the various technology comparisons

• List the LTE/SAE main requirements.

• Identify the Network Architecture Evolution towards an LTE/SAE network.

• Underline the LTE/SAE key features.

• Briefly explain the basics of the LTE Air Interface.

• Review the 3GPP specification work concerning LTE/SAE.

2
User Expectation
 Highly desire of broadband acces everywhere
1. Home, Office
2. Train, Aeroplane, Canteen, during the Breake

 Ubiquity (anywhere, anytime, wire free broadband)

 Higher voice quality

 Higher speed

 Lower prices

 Multitude of services

9
Requirements of LTE
• Peak data rate
– 100 Mbps DL/ 50 Mbps UL within 20 MHz bandwidth.

• Up to 200 active users in a cell (5 MHz)

• Less than 5 ms user-plane latency

• Mobility
– Optimized for 0 ~ 15 km/h.
– 15 ~ 120 km/h supported with high performance.
– Supported up to 350 km/h or even up to 500 km/h.

• Enhanced multimedia broadcast multicast service (E-MBMS)

• Spectrum flexibility: 1.25 ~ 20 MHz

• Enhanced support for end-to-end QoS

LTE Network Architecture

12
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)

13
Key Features of LTE
• Multiple access scheme
– DL: OFDMA with CP.
– UL: Single Carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) with CP.

• Adaptive modulation and coding

– DL/UL modulations: QPSK, 16QAM, and 64QAM
– Convolutional code and Rel-6 turbo code

• Advanced MIMO spatial multiplexing techniques

– (2 or 4)x(2 or 4) downlink and uplink supported.
– Multi-user MIMO also supported.

• Support for both FDD and TDD

• H-ARQ, mobility support, rate control, security, and etc

• LTE offers scalable bandwidths, from 1.4MHz up to 20MHz,

together with support for both FDD paired and TDD unpaired spectrum.
