ABOUT TO COMPUTER APPLICATION
An application, or application program, is a software program that runs on your
computer. Web browsers, e-mail programs, word processors, games, and
utilities are all applications. The word "application" is used because each
program has a specific application for the user. For example, a word
processor can help a student create a research paper, while a video game can
prevent the student from getting the paper done.
In contrast, system software consists of programs that run in the background,
enabling applications to run. These programs include assemblers, compilers, file
management tools, and the operating system itself. Applications are said to run
on top of the system software, since the system software is made of "low-level"
programs. While system software is automatically installed with the operating
system, you can choose which applications you want to install and run on your
computer.
Macintosh programs are typically called applications, while Windows programs
are often referred to as executable files. This is why Mac programs use
the .APP file extension, while Windows programs use the .EXE extension.
Though they have different file extensions, Macintosh and Windows programs
serve the same purpose and can both be called applications.

INTRODUCTION (COMPUTER APPLICATION)


The computer has created a true revolution in engineering design and analysis.
Product engineers apply science, math and original thought to develop new
products or new product solutions. Traditionally, this consisted of drawing out
new products by hand, then building them. But this was laborious.

Using computers and specialty computer software, engineers can design, test and
make changes to products in minimal time. Computers help them complete the
task at hand much more quickly.
COMPUTER- AIDED DESIGN (CAD)

It is the use of computers to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or


optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the
designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through
documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing. It is often used in the
form of electronic files for print, machining, and other operations.

Its use in designing electronic systems is known as electronic design automation


(EDA). In mechanical design it is known as MECHANICAL DESIGN
AUTOMATION (MDA) or COMPUTER- AIDED DRAFTING (CAD), which
includes the process of creating a technical drawing with the use of computer
software.

It may be used to design curves and figures in 2-D space or curves, surfaces,
solids in 3-D space. It is also used to produce computer animation for special
effects in movies, advertising and technical manuals.

The CAD system performs two activities:

 Product design
 Production preparation, i.e. part drawing, assembly drawing, bill of
materials etc.

PRODUCT CYCLE AND CAD/CAM

Product cycle starts from customers and markets and involves three steps:

 Product identification
 Design and optimization engineering
 Drafting
Step 1.: product concept development is aided in CAD modelling in which
a large number of alternative designs can be generated on the computer
screen. The types of models used in CAD are:
1. Wireframe models
2. Surface models
3. Solid models

Step 2.: design engineering and optimization, can be done on a CAD


terminal through sophisticated methods such as finite element analysis in which
the proposed products is divided in to triangular shaped elements.

Step3.: drafting can be effectively executed on a CAD terminal using input


devices such as digitizing tablet in which any line drawing can be done and stored/
displayed by the computer on the CRT screen. The digitizing tablet helps in
covering x and y movement of the tablets into digital signals which are stored in
the computer for possible retrieval, CADD replaces the conventional the board
with CRT screen. Other input hardware includes the track ball, the mouse, and
the joystick.

ROLE OF COMPUTER IN DESIGN PROCESS

The design related tasks which are performed by a modern CAD system can be
grouped into four functional areas:

 Geometric modelling: this involves computer compatible mathematical


description of the geometric of an object
 Engineering analysis: some sort of analysis is required. The analysis may
be stress- strain calculation, heat transfer computations, to describe the
dynamic behaviour of the system being designed.
 Design review and evaluation: checking the accuracy of design can be
accomplished conveniently on the graphics terminal.
 Automate drafting: this procedure results in saving a lot of time and
labour. Computer aided drafting is known as design workstation.
