13 Coding Lesson Idea Template

This lesson plan introduces a coding project for 7th grade science on the human body systems. Students will be assigned one body system to focus on and will code an interactive project using Scratch to illustrate the key functions and interactions of their assigned system. They will present their projects and then discuss how all the body systems work together to support life processes. Coding allows for custom animated projects that can't be replicated through traditional posters or papers. An internet safety contract is in place and students will only use first names and share their links within the class.

Coding and Computational Thinking

Lesson Idea Name: Body Systems

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 7th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S7L2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to describe how cell structures, cells,
c. Construct an argument that systems of the body (Cardiovascular, Excretory, Digestive, Respiratory,
Muscular, Nervous, and Immune) interact with one another to carry out life processes. (Clarification
statement: The emphasis is not on learning individual structures and functions associated with each system,
but on how systems interact to support life processes.)

Technology Standard Addressed: 5c. Students break problems into component parts, extract key
information, and develop descriptive models to understand complex systems or facilitate problem solving.
Selected Technology Tool:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):
Idea from: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/14981742/
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Optimize individual choice and autonomy by giving students the choice and freedom choose
their own topic within the guidelines which makes the project more meaningful.
Representation: Offer ways of customizing the display of information by using the coding software. This
software allows students to customize their project whoever they choose.
Action and Expression: Support planning and strategy development by giving them guidance pages and
rubrics as a loose guide to craft their project around.
Lesson idea implementation:
Teachers would give students a rundown of the coding software so everyone is on the same page when
starting their projects. The project will be introduced after brainstorming what each body system does. Each
body system will be assigned so each one is covered during the presentations. After the presentations we will
conclude with a discussion about how each system is connected to each other and how they work hand-in-
hand to keep the body running. Each student will be assessed by using the rubric they were provided with
when the project was assigned.
Importance of technology:
By using a coding tool students can create their own project from scratch and can truly create whatever they
want. You can’t exactly do the animations without this technology. You can have students create something
on paper or on a poster but it doesn’t incorporate any technology or any movement. Coding adds so much
personality to a product that students can create for classroom use.
Inspiration (optional):
https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/14981742/ I borrowed the idea of having students walk through their
chosen body system. In this project inspiration, they walk through the digestive system.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
An internet safety contract was signed at the beginning of the semester by parents and students so that the
technology use in the classroom is appropriate and on task. Students will be given instructions to only use
Coding and Computational Thinking
first names and last initials when putting their names on their project and to only share their link with the
class and no one else.
Reflective Practice:
This project is extremely engaging for the students who created the project as well as their peers that get to
experience the projects firsthand. Because coding is so engaging I feel that for the students who come in
contact with the coding project they will be interested as well since it isn’t a “traditional” poster project.
When everyone has presented I will compose a document for all of the coding links for students to have as a
resource for review on their own.
