Informative Speech Outline

Name: Samantha Johnson

Date: September 27, 2017

Topic: Breast Cancer

General Purpose: To Inform

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Breast Cancer information and awareness

Thesis Statement: In my speech, I will disclose information about what Breast Cancer is, how to
diagnose/detect it, and what the treatments are for it.

Introduction:
I. Attention: Does anyone know what month it is? It’s October which means it is
breast cancer awareness month.
II. Relate Statement:Majority of the people in here have known or know someone
who has been affected by breast cancer. According to breastcancer.org, about
250,000 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. Women
aren’t the only one’s who can get breast cancer though, it is also estimated that
2,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer as well.
III. Credibility: In 2014, my mom was one of thousands diagnosed with breast
cancer. She decided to have a double mastectomy, which means she had both
breasts surgically removed. Thankfully, she is cancer free and still in remission.
IV. Preview: First I will explain exactly what breast cancer is, then I will explain ways
to diagnose and detect it, and finally I will discuss the various treatment options
available for breast cancer.

Body:
I. Main Point 1: What Breast Cancer Is
A. Cancer is defined as abnormal cells that grow and invade healthy cells in the
body. Breast cancer starts in the cells of the breast as a group of cancer cells
that can then invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body. A
tumor is a mass of abnormal tissue. There are two types of breast cancer tumors:
those that are non-cancerous, or benign, and those that are cancerous, which
are malignant. Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant, “cancer” cells form
in the tissues of the breast.
B. Breast Cancer is not contagious, you can not get breast cancer from someone
who has the disease.
C. Factors that add to the risk of getting breast cancer: age(55 and over), genetics
and family history, race(caucasian women), gender(100 times more often in
women than men)
Now that you know exactly what breast cancer is, let’s talk about ways to detect and diagnose it.

II. Main Point 2: Diagnoses/ Ways to Detect It.

A. Yearly breast exam
1. This is where the doctor checks the breast and lymph nodes in the armpit
to check for any abnormalities or lumps.
2. It is also recommended that people should also do self breast exams to
check for any unusual.
B. Mammograms
1. A mammogram is an x ray of the chest. Mammograms can check the
breast for any abnormalities such as lumps
C. Breast MRI
1. Like a mammogram , but more precise and in depth. A patient is given an
IV with contrast so the doctors can get a clearer image of anything
suspicious in the breast tissue.According to the Susan G. komen
Foundation, it is recommended for people with a strong family history of
breast cancer to get an MRI done if they suspect they have a lump.

Transition: If a lump or abnormality is found through any of these tests, the doctor will then
follow up with a biopsy, which is where they take a sample of the cells from the lump, to
determine if the lump is cancerous or benign. If the patient is diagnosed with cancer, the cancer
is then separated into a category depending on how aggressive and rapidly it’s growing. This is
known as the “stage” and it can range from stage 0, being the lowest to stage 4 being the most
aggressive. This then helps the patient and doctor determine which type of treatment would be
best. So what are the different treatment options?

III. Main Point Three: Treatments

1. Surgery
a. Lumpectomy is where just the lump is removed, lower stages
b. Mastectomy is when the entire breast tissue is removed
2. Radiation Therapy
a. Uses high targeted X Rays to kill the cancer cells.
b. Used for very low stages or is used after surgery to make sure all of the cancer is
gone
3. Chemotherapy
a. Chemotherapy drugs are given to the patients to kill or disable the cancer cells.
Given to people with high stages or after surgery because it has such an impact
on the body, like losing body hair, fatigue, weight loss and gain
My mom had stage 2 breast cancer in her right breast and since she has such a strong family
history and carries the gene for breast cancer, she decided the best form of treatment would be
to have a double mastectomy and chemo and radiation. Thankfully she got both breasts
removed because they also found stage 0 cancer in her left breast as well after her surgery.
She then followed up her surgery with chemo and radiation to make sure the cancer was all
gone.

Transition: In closing…

Conclusion: My purpose today has been to inform you all about breast cancer awareness and
ways to detect it, diagnose it, and treatment options. Like I said, it is October, so it is breast
cancer awareness month so I hope you all feel as if you are now more aware about breast
cancer.
