Lesson: Differentiates Between Equations and Inequalities

Learning Competency: Differentiates Between Equations and Inequalities

I. Objectives
a. Differentiate equations from inequalities.
b. Determine whether a mathematical sentence is an equation or an inequalities.
c. Apply the concepts of equations and inequalities in real life situations.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Linear Equations and Inequalities in One Variable
Sub-topic: Differentiates between equations and inequalities
Materials: Pictures, visual aids, chalk, board, eraser
Reference: Elementary Algebra, by Julieta G. Bernabe, pp. 120-123

III. Procedure
Teacher`s Activity Students Activity
A. Preliminary Activities

Prayer

Greetings

Good morning, class!

Good morning, Ma`am!

Checking Attendance

1. Review

Your last topic was about translating

English sentences to Mathematical sentences,
right?
Yes, Ma`am!

And we have symbols, right?

Yes, Ma`am!
What are the related words for this
symbol?

Equals, is equal to, is, was /were, gives, result,

will be.
<

Is less than, fewer than.

>

Is greater than, more than.

Is less than or equal to, at most, no more

than.

Is greater than or equal to, at least, no less
than.

And for ≠?

Is not equal.
Very good!

2. Motivation

Directions: Study and analyze the pictures. Arrange

the following pictures according to their groups.
How did you arrange the following pictures?

Ma`am, we arranged it based on the pictures

presented, some pictures are balanced and equal
while others are not.

B. Developmental Activities

1. Activity
Direction: Sort the following equations and
inequalities into the appropriate categories.

0=0 2+3 = 4+1

3+3+3+3+3 = 3(5) 5x+2 = 12
-2 > 2 4(x-3) =-4
3(x+5) > 3x+5 2x ≤ 3x
7x < 25 6x ≥ 37

EQUATION INEQUALITIES

EQUATION INEQUALITIES

0=0 -2 > 2
3+3+3+3+3 = 3(5) 3(x+5) > 3x+5
2+3 = 4+1 2x ≤ 3x
5x+2 = 12 7x < 25
4(x-3) = -4 6x ≥ 37

2. Analysis

In your activity, what did you do?

Ma`am, we arranged the following equations and

inequalities into appropriate categories.
Very good!
How did you know that it Is equation?

Ma`am, it is indicating that two expressions are

equal.
How about inequalities?

It is indicating that two expressions are not equal.

Very good!

3. Abstraction

Now class, we will discuss about “Equations and

Inequalities “.
Understood?
Yes, Ma`am!

Equation is a mathematical sentence indicating

that two expressions are equal. The symbol “ = “ is
used to denote equality.

Inequality is a mathematical sentence indicating

that two expressions are not equal. The relation
symbols <, >, ≤, ≥, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ≠ are used to denote
inequality.

Examples:

EQUATION INEQUALITIES

0=0 -2 > 2
3+3+3+3+3 = 3(5) 3(x+5) > 3x+5
2+3 = 4+1 2x ≤ 3x
5x+2 = 12 7x < 25
4(x-3) = -4 6x ≥ 37

Understood?
Yes, Ma`am!

Class, what is an equation?

Ma`am, equation is a mathematical sentence
indicating that two expressions are equal.

And, what is the symbol?

“=“

What is an equality?
Ma`am, equality is a mathematical sentence
indicating that two expressions are not equal.
The symbol of inequality?

“ <, >, ≤, ≥, and ≠”

Very good!

4. Application

Directions: Place the symbol <, > or = inside the

heart to make each sentence true.

1. 10 10
2. (5+4)2 5(4+2)

3. 3(-2) -2(3)

4. 3(x+4) 3x+4

5. 6(3) 24

1. 10 = 10

2. (5+4)2 < 5(4+2)

,

3. 3(-2) = -2(3)

4. 3(x+4) > 3x+4

>
.

5. 6(3) < 24

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Determine whether the given is an

equation or an inequality.

1. X > 24
2. 2x + 6 = 10
3. 3(3) ≤ 9
4. 22-x > 12
5. 6x -8 = 22
6. (2+5)9 = 2(5+9)
7. 5(x+4) > x+4
8. x+3x = 8
9. 4x+2x ≥ 7x-x
6𝑥
10. 2 = 8x-5x

1. Inequality
2. Equation
3. Inequality
4. Inequality
5. Equation
6. Equation
7. Inequality
8. Equation
9. Inequality
10. Equation
V. Assignment

Directions: Determine whether each given

mathematical sentence is an equation or an
equality.

1. x=x
2. -5x > 26
3. xyz ≠ abc
4. 7(3x+1) ≤ 49
