PS4 Mom Ii

This document contains 8 problems related to mechanics of materials and deflections of curved beams and rings. Problem 1 asks to determine the required outward tangential forces to open a split ring by a given amount. Problem 2 gives an expression for the deflection of a U-shaped pipe due to forces applied at the ends. Problem 3 asks for the horizontal and vertical displacements of the end of a quarter circular curved member.

Problem Sheet No. 4

1. A split ring of radius R is used as a retainer on a machine shaft, and, in order to install it, it is
necessary to apply outward tangential forces F at the split to open up a gap . If the flexure stiffness
of the cross-section is EI, determine the required value of the forces.

2. A U-shaped pipe connecting two vessels has a radius R and a leg length L. Show that the deflection
caused by forces P applied at the free ends and perpendicular to the legs due to thermal expansion is

4. A curved beam is in the form of a semicircle as shown in Figure 2.

The free end is pinned but is restrained to move in the horizontal
direction only. If a horizontal force F is applied at the free end show F
that the vertical restraining force on the end of the beam is given by

and vertical deflections at A.

into a horizontal table. The remainder of the rod is bent into the
form of three-quarters of a circle of radius 150 mm. The free end is
constrained to move vertically. Determine the vertical deflection for
a load of 10 kg. E= 208 kN/mm2.
