Question 1
A flatbed truck carrying a load of cargo is modeled as shown in the following figure.
(a) Find the equations of motion in the time domain. And convert them in the Laplace
domain.
(b) Find the transfer function that relates the position of the cargo relative to the truck to
𝐗(𝐬)−𝐘(𝐬)
the applied force. (Hint: find )

For the rest of the equations, M1=10, M2= 2, B1= 8, B2= 3, K= 50, and f(t)= 1, a step
input.
(c) What is the characteristic equation of the transfer function found in (b) and what are
the poles? And according to these poles do you expect the system to be stable of
unstable?
(d) Find the step response to a unit step input using Matlab.
(e) Please draw the corresponding block diagram (Using Simulink) of the transfer
function found in (b) and plot the results. Comment on the results comparing it to the
results obtained in (d) and to what you expected in (c).

1- Explain the term stability and show examples of the poles locations and step response
of stable and unstable systems to demonstrate your explanation. (Hint: two examples

2- Explain what is a marginally stable system and give one example from real life.
3- What is the difference between open and closed loop (Feedback) control systems.
Which one will provide a better behavior and why?
