My Accomplishments

Katherine Fernandez struggled with reading and writing in middle and high school, often being placed in remedial classes. However, through reflections and the guidance of her teacher Mrs. Figueroa, her writing improved over the course of her senior year. She learned skills like avoiding contractions, introducing and explaining quotes, and using MLA format. While she doubted herself on some assignments, she was proud of earning good grades like an 80% on an essay about Anglo-Saxon values. Her favorite paper was a four-page senior argumentative essay on a social issue where she provided sufficient evidence. After high school, her goals are to work on crafting interesting hooks and taking more time revising her papers.

Dear, Ms. Figueora,

In the beginning of my high school year, I struggled with many weaknesses when it came

to my writing. Ever since I was in middle school, reading and writing has always been a

challenge for me. Every day I would be pulled out of class to go into a Read180 classroom which

was a lower level reading and writing class for students who struggled in that specific subject. I

remember always being embarrassed to tell my friends where they would send me because I

didn’t want them to think less of me. When I started my freshman year, I remember having to

take the English placement test and failed which I then was placed in a reading improvement

class. I was basically facing the same problem all over again. Three times a week, our

assignment was to get together with our groups to read a book and take turns reading which has

helped me not only with my reading but also with my grammar. This year, I have improved on

many different aspects of my writing which I am proud of. Thanks to the reflections and to Mrs.

Figueroa, I learned that I needed to focus more in not using contractions, being able to introduce

and explain each quote and how to use MLA format. Throughout this year, there has been many

ups and downs meaning I had written assignments that I was not satisfy with and others where I

knew I killed it. In quarter 2 we were assigned to write about the Anglo-Saxon values and what

they meant. It was that essay I did not expect to get a good grade on due to me knowing I had

constantly repeated myself and did not focus on the main topic itself. I began to doubt myself

and when I had seen that I had scored an 80% on the Anglo-Saxon value essay, I seriously could
not believe it. The paper I was mostly proud of was my senior paper which was the Social issue

argumentative essay. On this assignment we were told it had to be at least four pages long which

I wrote more than what was needed and provided enough evidence to make the reader

understand. This is the paper I love looking back at and rereading this essay just to give me

motivation when it comes to writing other essays. Last semester when I was writing this paper, I

remembered staying up all-night writing and searching for information, stressing, hoping I would

just be done with it. This has been one of my many great accomplishments. There are many

writing goals after high school I still need to work on. One of my main goals is being able to

come up with an interesting hook to get the readers attention. That has been one of my many

struggles which I know I still have yet to improve on. Another main one is taking my time and

not rushing through my papers. Thank you Mrs. Fig for always being there for all of your

students and helping us by guiding us through.

Sincerely,

Katherine Fernandez
