Objectives:
Students will be able to solve real world problems using Order of Operations.
State Standards:
7.EEI.3 Extend previous understanding of Order of Operations to solve multi-step real-world and
mathematical problems involving rational numbers. Include fraction bars as a grouping symbol.
Context: I am teaching this particular lesson because it is a standard for all seventh graders to
know this. This will help students in math in their future careers in and out of school. Prior to
this, students have become familiar in recognizing algebraic expressions and determining an
appropriate form in real- world situations. They also have learned mathematical properties such
as commutative, associative, and distributive. With this being said, students will use what they
have learned in this section and portray their skill within this lesson. To prepare for the next
lesson, we are going to be working on applying the concepts of linear equations and inequalities
in one variable in real-life. We will also be applying the concepts of linear equations in
mathematical situations. After this lesson, we will follow the state standards and move in to
linear equations.
Data: Students will be grouped by their previous exit slip on what they learned. According to
their grade and how much information they contained, their group will be in 4 sections: students
that struggled, 2 groups of students that know the average content, and one group on students
who are ahead of the game. There will be an exit slip like any other day, that will determine how
Procedures:
Introduction (15 minutes): I will start my class by greeting everyone and letting the
students get settled. Then I will give them about roughly 5-7 minutes to do a warm-up question
dealing what we learned the previous day. I will then take about 3-5 minutes to go over the
problem and answer any questions for review. The last 5 minutes of class I will separate them
Teacher Directed (20 minutes): The group that I will be instructing will be the students
that are behind and have difficulty understanding the content. I will do this because I can make
them understand the content first and they will have a better understanding when working in the
other groups. I will have a worksheet that will have multiple problems. I will go over the first
few and then let the students work on the sheet independently. When they are finished, I will
then ask them to go to the smartboard and answer them. I will then go over each problem after
Collaborative (20 minutes): In the collaborative group, we will have the two middle
groups. They will start by picking a partner. They will then login to edpuzzle.com
to watch a video on how to do the lesson we are working on their computers. While watching
the video they will be answering multiple questions about the video as well as math problems.
Their job is to answer as many questions right at the end of the video. They will then compare
their grades to their partners. Whoever has the highest grades will get 3 extra points on their next
math test. This encourages them to be efficient as well as have fun with math.
Independent Digital (20minutes): The students that are ahead of the game will be at the
independent station first. This is because they already know most of the content so they will need
less instruction or help. They will be on Khan academy watching a video of the content on their
iPads (https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra-basics/basic-alg-foundations/alg-basics-
be taking notes and listing the steps on how to solve the problem. There will be two different set
of notes. The notes with their problems will be kept for themselves. I will go around and check
them and the notes of the steps will be collected to hang on the wall. Different students have
different ways of solving, when students can list the steps, that means they have a good
understanding of the problem. IF they are done early (some videos will be short), they can get on
Closure (15minutes): The class will return to their seats when I ring the bell. We will
then go over what we learned at each station. I will then collect all the worksheet assignments
that I have not collected as well as check their notes from the station. I will then ask the students
if they have any questions relating to the lesson. Students will ask their question and I will
answer them. Once there are no questions, I will then pass out an exit slip with 4 questions. The
Rationale:
Edpuzzle.com
This is used in the Collaborative station. I chose this website because it is an educational
website that allows students to watch videos and answer questions. It shows students their grade
and whether they got the question right or wrong. It supports this standard and objective because
it relates to our topic. It is high quality because I have had experience with it. It is free of error
and bias. When watching the video it has specific goals such as answering the questions. It gives
feedback on whether you correctly answered the question. Their design motivates students to
finish answering all the questions. It is consistent and you could always go back and re-watch the

KhanAcademy.com
This video was used in the independent digital station. This piece of media gives students
a better understanding on the content. It is high quality overall. I have also used this piece in
previous work, and I liked how it gave different examples of math problems. This relates to the
standard because it covers the topic. There is no bias or any type of errors. Their goal is for you
to learn and engage with the video. The video is creative and motivates students to watch the
video. You can always go back and watch the video. Overall, it gives a great example of
