Puri LS: While BJP’s Patra Sings, BJD’s Lawyer Pinaki Set To Pass Winning Order

The Puri Lok Sabha Constituency, on eof the most prestigious constituencies in the country,
is all set to witness an interesting poll battle between spokespersons of three major political
parties--BJP, Congress and the BJD. , though the main battle is between BJP and BJP many
see it as ‘Doctor VS Lawyer’ fight..

From singing romantic numbers during election campaigns to addressing public rallies in
Odia, from cuddling babies to touching feet of elders, BJP spokesperson and party's Puri
Lok Sabha candidate Sambit Patra is leaving no stone unturned to woo voters ahead of the
ensuing General Elections 2019 in the temple town of Odisha.

His opponent, Misra – the incumbent MP of Puri – too increased his campaign pitch, with multiple
roadshows.

Congress’s journalist-turned-politician Nayak is taking on BJP's national spokesperson

Sambit Patra besides sitting BJD MP Pinaki Mishra, a spokesman of the regional party.

Reacting to BJP’s claims to win the seat, Mishra said all one can see is the razzmatazz of the BJP.
They are jumlebaaz and nautankibaaz. When Modi’s popularity was its peak in 2014, their jumla
didn’t work. I don’t see it happening now.”

There were also been an attempt to invoke Lord Jagannath by BJP’s Sambit patra for electoral gains.
Ever since his nomination was announced, Patra has been reiterating that “Jagannath dakichhanti,
Modi patheichhanti (Jagannath has called me and Modi has sent me)”. The BJD has raised objections
after the statement was printed on publicity material and a case was registered with the Puri police.

BJD’s Misra however, says the politicisation of Jagannath would not work. “People of Puri don’t like
Jagannath to be politicised or religion to be mixed with politics. Jagannath is a very secular God.
During Rath Yatra, his rath (chariot) stops at the tomb of Salabeg (a 17th century Muslim poet).

Puri- BJD’s Impregnable Fortress

“Puri, the holy city is an absolutely impregnable fortress of the BJD. Six out of seven MLAs of Puri
are BJD members.

In the 2014, Mishra polled more than 5 lakh votes and defeated his nearest Congress rival Sucharita
Mohanty by over 2.5 lakh votes. BJP’s Ashok Sahu came third with 2.15 lakh votes.

Sitting MLAs Pradeep Maharathy and Maheswar Mohanty have been holding the Pipili and Puri forts,
respectively, for four consecutive elections since 2000. While Sanjay Das Burma has been winning
from Brahmagiri for the last two elections, after the death of Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra, road
became rosy automatically for Dasburma to win.

In Satyabadi too, Umakanta Samantray contested 2014 elections as an Independent, after being ousted
from BJD Similarly, Arun Kumar Sahu has won from Nayagarh, which was added to the Puri
Parliamentary constituency after delimitation in 2008, thrice in a row.

Meanwhile BJD has repeated all the five sitting MLAs in 2019 elections.

Chilika still distance for BJD

Bibhuti Bhusan Harichandan, sitting MLA from Chilika has the lone old warrior of BJP from this
parliamentary constituency. He was elected from Chilika thrice (2000, 2004, 2014), but the party has
replaced him with Prithiviraj Harichandan this time.

Naveen Road Show Steal The Show

Meanwhile, CM Patnaik’s pet scheme ‘KALIA’ – an acronym for Krushak Assistance for Livelihood
and Income Augmentation) – is how Odias fondly refer to Jagannath.

A few days later on April 23, BJD president Naveen Patnaik toured the Pilgrim Town in his high-tech
bus, canvassing for votes, and addressed public meeting for third-phase polls. He also offered prayers
at the Jagannath temple. Thousands of people given standing ovcation to the popular leader that
swing the tide in favour of BJD.
