SYLLABUS OF PHD ENTRANCE TEST 2017-18

SECTION - A
Multiple Choice Questions

Part I - Multiple Choice Questions on Research Methodology (40 marks)

Writing Skills; Tenses, parts of speech, clauses, subject verb agreement, idioms and phrases,
reading comprehension, word meaning, synonyms-antonyms, hyponyms.
Logical and Analytical Reasoning;
Programming Skills; Data types, assignments, conditional statements, branching and looping,
input and output statements.
Mathematics and statistics; Algebra, ordinary differential equations (ODE), numerical analysis,
real and complex analysis, vector analysis, measure of central tendency, probability distribution
function.

Part II - Multiple Choice Questions on Electrical Engineering (10 marks)

Circuit/Network Theory, Control Systems, Microprocessor, Measurement and Instrumentations,


Power Systems, Power Electronics, Renewable Energy Systems, Electric Machines, Electric
Drives, High Voltage Engineering.

SECTION - B
Subjective Questions (30 Marks)

Specialization: Power System and Drives

Transformers, DC and AC Electric Machines, Power Electronics Converters and their applications,
Circuit Theory, Renewable Energy Sources and their applications ,DC and AC motor Drives,
Analysis of Transmission lines, Excitation System, Load Flow analysis, Economic Operation of
Power System, Power System Stability and control, Fault Analysis, Power System Protection,
FACTS Devices , HVDC technology, Electric Power Generation.

OR

Specialization: Instrumentation and Control

Measurement Errors and their analysis, Analog and Digital Measuring Instruments, Bridges and
Potentiometers. Sensors and Transducers, Data Acquisition Systems. Mathematical Modeling of
Control Systems, Transfer Function, Block Diagrams, Signal Flow Graphs. Stability analysis of
Linear Time Invariant Systems. State Space Model. P, PI and PID Controllers. Pole Placement
techniques. Discrete Data Systems, State Variable representation, Stability analysis of Non Linear
systems.

OR

Specialization: High Voltage & Insulation Engineering

Conduction and Breakdown in Gases, Liquid and Solid Dielectrics, Vacuum as High Voltage
Insulation, Properties and applications of Insulating Materials, Generation and Measurement of
High D.C, A.C, Impulse Voltage and Impulse currents, transients in Power Systems and Insulation
Co-ordination, Gas Insulated Switchgear and Substations, SF6 technology, High Voltage Testing of
Electrical Apparatus, Non Destructive Testing of Material and Electrical Apparatus, Partial
Discharges and their Measurement, Applications of High Voltage Engineering in Industry.
