Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For students with physical impairments, I would have an activity gym
with shapes on the string to practice gross-motor skills ready for use. iPad will be available when children
need more step-by-step guidance, looking at videos, and utilizing apps to practice their shapes recognition.
Headphones and closed cation will be available to student with hearing impairments.

Engagement: To introduce the subject, shapes will be placed on the desk. The children will identify and use a
key to color the shapes different colors. The children will use shapes to build and create.
Representation: Books about shapes and videos will be used to familiarize themselves. A shape matching
game will be utilized as well. The children have shape puzzles at their disposal.
Action and Expression: The children will use shapes to make pictures. Dry eraser boards will be available for
children to practice and show their knowledge. The children will participate in a Kahoot! quiz developed by
myself. The children will find shapes in their environment (homes) and post their findings on our class blog.

Lesson idea implementation: The lesson will be introduced with shapes placed on the desk for exploration.
At each table, the children will identify the shapes. As the children are identifying the shapes, the shapes will
be colored different colors. This will be a pre-assessment of their knowledge about shapes. On day 2, the
students will listen to books and videos, solve shape puzzles, and play a shape matching game. On the third
and final day, the students will use shapes to make pictures, practice drawing shapes by looking at index cards
with different shapes, and taking a quiz.
For homework, the students will find shapes around their homes with the help of their parents. The
assignment will be posted to our classroom blog page. The learning can be differentiated based on the
pictures each student place on the blog. You can see the interest of not only the child but also the family. The

students learning can be extend by having students to use shapes to create other shapes (i.e. two triangles =
one square). The lesson will be concluded by looking at the blog of shape pictures. The children will be
provided feedback based on the quiz and comments written on the blog.

Importance of technology: Website-creation tools such as Edublogs demonstrates the similarities and
differences of students and their families. The objective for the assignment is to find object inside and outside
of their homes, but it also demonstrates a culture aspect in the lives of each family. It could be done with
technology by students bring pictures to class, but the parents and others wouldn’t be involved. The unity of
the project will be lost which shows: “We are the same, but different”. The only other technology a student
can use would be a camera and internet access.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: First and foremost, I will follow the school district’s policies on posting
student’s work and pictures. I will help the children to understand that they should never post a personal
information or personal photos on the internet, email, or any online communication device. As for alleviating
any fears of parents/administrator, I will ask parents to be careful about the method of posting in their homes
away from certain items such as family pictures, any item with an address, street signs, or any familiar
landmark near your home. Only the first name or alias name (i.e. middle name) will be posted to the
classroom website. The comments will be monitored for safety purposes.

Reflective Practice: I feel the activity I created help children to see beyond the flash card, videos, and books,
but find shapes in their environment. To extend the activity further, we can look how shapes are used to
construct buildings, bridges, etc. To enhance the project, I would use the internet and ipads to look at
different architecture dealing with shapes. It would be great to have the children to use shapes as a building
challenge.
