Coding and Computational Thinking

Lesson Idea Name: Scratch – Waving Flags

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 7th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: SS7G1 Locate selected features of Africa.
a. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map: Sahara, Sahel, savanna, tropical rain forest, Congo
River, Niger River, Nile River, Lake Victoria, Great Rift Valley, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Atlas Mountains, and Kalahari
Desert.
b. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map the countries of Democratic Republic of the Congo,
Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Sudan.

Technology Standard Addressed: Global Collaborator

7d Students explore local and global issues and use collaborative technologies to work with others to
investigate solutions.

Selected Technology Tool: Scratch

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will have the opportunity to work individually to create their project using Scratch.
They will be able to work during class in a quiet environment. This project will be a learning stretch because
students will have to think critically about the “code” they have to create to get their flags to wave.

Representation: Each flag they create on the activity relates to a country that was explored in class. Students
who are able to create the code that makes the flags wave correctly will win a prize and their product will be
shown to the class.

Action and Expression: Students will talk about what they learned during this lesson with peers. They will
able to work through the mistakes they make and be able to work out the kinks.

Lesson idea implementation: In Social Studies, it is necessary for students to learn about cultural and ethnic
beliefs of different countries. Some specific countries and continents explored in Social Studies is Latin
American, Asia, Africa, and North/South America. Students will look through the standards and design an
interactive project using Scratch that will have at least 3 country flags that are waving. Students should think
about countries that they might like to visit or some students may have immigrated from that country. They
should research traditions and beliefs of the countries they use. They will discuss in groups what they have
learned.

Importance of technology: Students need to have a basic knowledge of coding in order to complete this
project. They will have a video to watch that will walk through step by step how to create a project using
Scratch and how to get the different parts to move. Students cannot complete this project without using
technology. It requires them to have a computer where they can access the internet.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: I will remind students of internet safety and appropriate use. I will
consult with administration when planning this lesson. I want to make sure this lesson follows all FERPA and
copyright laws.

Reflective Practice: I hope my students will have an introductory understanding of coding after completing
this lesson. I hope they will find coding to be interesting, challenging, and engaging. I think they will enjoy
getting to create projects. It will definitely stretch their learning because it involves math and science.
