My Final Reflection
My Final Reflection
Dear Malcolm,
It feels as if I Have come full circle. I started this class with a letter to you and I am happy to
leave your class the same way. Throughout my time in your class, I have learned a lot. Each
Assignment taught me something new. Each assignment was important, the Studios, the Topic
Proposal, the Annotated Bibliography, the first EIP draft, the final draft and the ePortfolio. Each
assignment had its own difficulty and satisfaction that came from completing it. This class
For me, the Studios were the least impactful of the assignments. They were still helpful
however. Each Studio had a different objective that intended to help me become a better writer. I
believe they did help me learn new skills. These skills however, need further development
through more writing. Developing these skills will be a continuous process that will hopefully
make full use of what the studios have taught me. Many of the studios would have been more
useful had the due dates been slightly different. Many of them came just after an assignment
where they would have been useful. For example, the last one was due just after I had finished
my revision. While this was partly my fault as I could have done the studio earlier, having the
due date earlier would encourage students such as myself to use that information in our revision.
The Topic Proposal assignment was exciting to me. The hardest part was coming up with
a topic. After I found a topic that I had a genuine interest in, it was easy. Seeing how much
information was available for my topic was exciting. There was also a bit of fear that came along
with the Topic Proposal. I wasn’t afraid of the assignment; I was afraid of the eight pages I knew
I would have to write afterwards. I knew the paper was a long-ways away but this assignment
make sure I was asking the right questions. I had never had to find specific types of sources. It
wasn’t easy, especially with my topic. The attention that VAR gets mostly comes from sports
news articles. Finding a reliable website was difficult. Finding a peer reviewed journal was even
harder. The entire process helped me both to become a better thinker and questioner. I was able
to ask the right questions and figure out where VAR would be a part of a reliable source.
The Extended Inquiry process was by far the hardest assignment I had this semester. The
first draft was difficult. It took me a long time to get all of my ideas together. After I had my
ideas together things got easier. I still ended up being disorganized with my ideas in the end. My
paper wasn’t as orderly as I would have liked. This made the revisions ten times harder to do.
That was what made the Extended Inquiry Project so hard for me. I had to completely re-arrange
my paper. I also had to add two full pages of new material, as well as, fixing all my small
mistakes and preventing new ones. This made it extremely satisfying when I finished. I knew it
The ePortfolio surprised me the most. I don’t have a creative bone in my body. Or so I
thought. The portfolio allowed me to find a small amount of creativity within me however; I
fought against that creativity with everything I had. I waited and waited to start designing the
website. As soon as I started, I began to enjoy it. Even though it doesn’t look great, I still got a
lot of satisfaction in doing it. While the ePortfolio didn’t make me a better writer or thinker, it
Thank you for teaching me how to be a better writer this semester. I have learned a lot in
the class and I do believe I have developed as a writer and as a person. I started the semester still
being a little shy. Throughout this semester and in your class, I have come even further out of my
shell. Coming from such a small school with a graduating class of 8, I needed to get further out
of my comfort zone. This class played a role in that. I strongly believe each one of the
assignments I did for this class developed me as writer, questioner, thinker, and a person. Thank
you again.
Sincerely,
David Flowe
