User Help Document for a Router and Network Setup

Section 1
Logging Into a NetGear Router

This section will show you how to use a web browser to log into your Netgear router and access
the options available for establishing, maintaining, and monitoring a home wireless internet network.
These steps assume the router has been plugged in and the appropriate cables have been used to
connect the Netgear router to a modem and internet access is available.

1. Open a web browser of your choosing. (i.e. Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Safari)

2. In the address bar, clear any text and enter 192.168.1.1 and press enter. You may be prompted to

enter a username and password. If so, the default username is “admin” and the password is “admin”

Section 2
Creating the SSID (Network Name)

1. Once logged in you will see a screen similar to this one. Click either the box labeled “wireless” in the
center of the screen, or the tab labeled “wireless” in the column on the left.
4 Daniel Parks

2. You will then see this screen. In the center of the screen you will see a heading that says “Name
(SSID)”. It is here that you can give your network the name of your choosing.

3. Once SSID selection has been made, click the green “Apply” button towards the top of the screen.

Section 3
Securing the Network With a Password

1. From the screen you used to name your network, scroll down until you see the section labeled
security options.

2. Type the password you would like to use to access your home network in the text box available in the
“Security Options” section.
6 Daniel Parks

3. Once a strong password has been chosen, click the green “Apply” button towards the top of the
screen.

Section 4
Monitoring Devices Connected to the Network

1. Click the tab in the column on the left labeled “Home”. It will bring you back to the router’s home
screen.
7 Daniel Parks

2. Click on the box labeled “Attached Devices” or the tab in the left column labeled “Attached Devices”.
You will then see this screen. From here you can scroll through and see all devices that are connected to
your home network.

Section 5
Blocking Unwanted Device Connections to the Network

1. Staying on the “Attached Devices” screen, you will notice the text “Access Control” highlighted in
purple towards the upper right of the screen. Click this text.
8 Daniel Parks

2. Using this screen you can click the check boxes next to each device and then click either the buttons
labeled “Block” or “Allow” to determine the action the network will take when seeing that device.

3. Once the selections of which devices to block or allow have been made, click the green button labeled
“Apply” towards the top of the screen.
9 Daniel Parks

Section 6
Updating Router Firmware

1. Click the “Advanced” tab in the upper left section of the screen to go to this screen

2. Click drop down arrow on the tab labeled “Administration” to expand the tab. From there click the
link labeled “Firmware Update”.
10 Daniel Parks

3. You will then see this screen. Click on the purple button labeled “Check” at the top of the screen to
initialize the update process. If there is an update available you will then be prompted to download it
and it should begin installation automatically.

4. If no update is available you will be notified. You can then continue configuring your router in other
ways or log out of the router interface.

Section 7
Things to be Aware of

1. If your browser is using a pop-up blocker, it may need to be turned off to use some of the
configuration features shown above. Otherwise, in the case of using the Firefox browser, you may need
to click the “Allow” button in the upper right corner of the screen if the page seems slow to load.

2. You may be prompted to enter your login credentials throughout the configuration process. If that
happens it is normal. Enter credentials and proceed as normal.

3. No changes will take effect until the green “Apply” button has been clicked.

4. Use a strong password, both for logging into the router and for the network itself.

5. If any settings or configurations are unclear, perform an internet search or contact customer service
for clarification before proceeding.

6. If any configuration has been performed in error and can not be changed, or if passwords have been
forgotten, it is possible to restore the router to factory settings. This is covered elsewhere and not in this
guide.
