This document describes the design and fabrication of a sugarcane cutting machine for the cane-can industry in Nagpur, India. The machine was designed to cut sugarcane stalks of up to 10 feet in length into approximately 2-foot pieces in a single cycle. The machine would be semi-automatic, requiring an operator to feed stalks in and collect cut pieces. The design aims to reduce labor costs and time compared to manual cutting while improving safety. A literature review covered previous work on sugarcane harvesting methods and equipment. The proposed machine was intended to benefit the local cane-can industry by more efficiently processing sugarcane.

Factors impacting on cane cutter performance were also investigated. A small number of time and motion studies were also conducted to identify the time utilisation of the various cane cutter tasks. Results indicate that cane cutter performances vary widely between cutters, farms and regions, and average output is greatly dependent on harvesting systems. C.
