CHAPTER 3 Current Electricity

Final Test 1
1. When a straight wire of resistance R is bent into U-shape, does its resistance
change?
2. Define the term resistivity and write the SI unit.
3. For household electrical wiring, one uses Cu wires or AI wires. What
considerations are kept in mind?
4. Define the current sensitivity of a galvanometer. Write its SI unit?
5. Why do we prefer a potentiometer to measure the emf of a cell rather than
a voltmeter?
6. What is the advantage of using thick metallic strips to join wires in a
potentiometer?
7. Answer the following Questions:
(a) A steady current flows in a metallic couductor of non-uniform cross-
section. Which of these quantities is constant along the conductor :
current,current desity,drift speed?
(b) Is ohm’s law universally applicable for all conducting materials? If
not, give examples of materials which do not obey Ohm’s law.
8. Two cells of emfs ɛ1 and ɛ2 and internal resistance r1 and r2 respectively are
connected in parallel as shown in the figure.
(1) The equivalente.m.f. of the combination,
(2) The equivalente resistance of the combination, and
(3) The potential difference between the points A and B.

9. The given circuit represents a balanced Wheatstone’s bridge.calculate the

value of resistance x.

10.(a) state, with the help of a suitable diagram, the principle on which the
working of a meter bridge in based.
(b) Answer the following:
(1) Why are the connections between resistors in a meter bridge made of
thick copper strips?
(2) Why is it generally preferred to obtain the balance point near the
middle of the bridge wire in meter bridge experiments?
11. A conductor of length ‘L’ is connected to a dc source of potential ‘V’. if the
length of the conductor is tripled by gradually stretching it, keeping ‘V’
constsnt, how will (1) drift speed of electrons and (2) resistance of the
conductor be affected ?justify your answer.
12.Two wire of equal length, one of aluminium and the other of copper have
the same resistance. Which of the two wires is lighter? Hence explain why
aluminium wires are preferred for overhead power cables.
13.Calculate the temperature at which the resistance of a conductor becomes
20% more then its resistance at 27˚C. The value of the temperature
coefficient of resistance of the conductor is 2.0 * 10-4/K.
14.In the meter bridge experiment, balance point was observed at J with AJ =L.
(1) The value of R and X were doubled and then interchanged. What would
be the new position of balance point?

how will the balance point get affected?
15. Vijay carries out a physics project on electric energy consumption and the
electricity bill for fifty houses in the vicinity of his residence. The survey also
includes the list of electrical appliances save electric energy and excessive
expenditure incurred on payment of electricity bills. The findings of saving
electrical energy and explained how the consumption can be minimised.
Answer the following questions based on the above information:
(1) Two different electric irons A and B are rated 750W-220V and 1000W-
220V respectively. Which of the two has lower resistance of its element?
Which of the two you will prefer for saving electrical energy?
(2) Which values are reflected in the choice and carrying out the project by
vijay?
(3) How can such values be inculcated in the lifestyles of individuals and
particularly the students?
