Conversion of Unit Class Notes #2

The document provides conversion factors between English and metric units for force and mass. It defines that 1 slug is equal to 32.17 pounds-mass, 1 kilogram is equal to 2.204 pounds-mass, and 1 kilogram-force is equal to 9.81 newtons. Additionally, it notes potential confusion between force and mass labels (lbf vs lbm, kgf vs kgm) and provides the conversion that 1 kilogram-force is equal to 2.204 pound-force.

SUMMARY OF
ENGLISH TO METRIC CONVERSION FACTORS
for FORCE AND MASS

F M L T F=ma

English lb slug ft s 1 lb = 1 slug x 1 ft/s

lb lbm ft s 1 lb = 1 lbm x 32.174 ft/s
1 slug = 32.174 lbm

Metric N kg m s 1 N = 1 kg x 1 m/s2
kgf kg m s 1 kgf = 1 kg x 9.81 m/s2
1 kgf = 9.81 N

English-to-Metric 1 lbm = 0.45359 kg

1 slug = 14.5940 kg
1 ft = 0.3048 m (1 in = 0.0254 m)
1 lb = 1 slug x 1 ft/s = 14.5940 kg x 0.3048 m/s2
= 4.44826 N

Metric-to English 1 kg = 2.2046 lbm

1 kg = 0.06852 slugs
1 m = 3.28084 ft (1 in = 0.0254 m)
1 N = 1 kg x 1 m/s2 = 0.06852 slugs x 3.28084 ft/s2
= 0.2248 lb

Imperial System Metric System

< -- > Slug (slug) < -- > Kilogram (kg)

M Pound mass Kilogram mass
(lbm) (kgm)
L Foot (ft) or Foot (ft) Meter (m) or Meter (m)
F Pound force Pound force (lbf) Kilogram force Newton (N)
(lbf) (kgf)

MASS

By definition:

1 lbf = 1 lbm x 32.17 ft/s2

1 lbf = 1 slug ft/s2

Therefore

1 slug = 32.17 lbm

Definition:

1 kgm = 2.204 lbm

1 kgm = 2.204 lbm x slug/32.17 lbm = 0.0685 slugs

The "m" for "mass" is commonly dropped, and this could lead to some confusion between
"lbf" & "lbm", and "kgf" & "kgm" (see below).

FORCE

By definition:

1 kgf = 1 kgm x 9.81 m/s2

1 N = 1 kgm m/s2

Therefore

1 kgf = 9.81 N

Also, using the above:

3

1 kgf = 1 kgm x 9.81 m/s2

= 2.204 lbm x 32.17 ft/s2

Therefore

1 kgf = 2.204 lbf

The "f" for "force" is commonly dropped, and this could lead to some confusion between
"lbf" & "lbm", and "kgf" & "kgm".

HORSEPOWER CONVERSION

1 hp = 550 ft-lb/s

= 550 ft x 3048 m/ft x lb x 4.448 N/lb/s

= 745.7 Nm/s

1 hp = 745.7 W

(lb-ft/s) (Nm/s) (W)

(hp) = --------- = ------- = ------
550 746 746
