DATA PREPARATION, MODELLING, ANALYSIS AND DESING OF
2-STORYED RC RESIDENCE PROJECT

1. Configuration of Proposed Building

2-STORYED RC RESIDENCE PROJECT Building is designed according to
ACI318-05 and AISC LRFD-05 code for structural member and IBC-06 code
for seismic and wind load analysis. Proposed building is located in
seismic zone III. The building is design as Intermediate moment
resisting frame (IMRF).
The profile of this structural model is listed as follow:
Type of structure : Two-storyed RC building
Type of occupancy: Residential
Shape of building : Rectangular
Location : Seismic zone III
Area of building : Width = 44 ft
Length = 52 ft
Height of building: Typical story height = 11 ft
Bottom story height = 12 ft
Overall height = 33 ft

2. Material Properties of Proposed Building

Material properties used for the proposed structure are as
follows:
(1) Analysis property data
Modulus of elasticity = 29 × 106 psi
Poisson's ratio = 0.3
Coefficient of thermal expansion = 6.5 × 10–6 in/in per
degree F
(2) Design property data
Bending reinforcement yield stress (fy) = 50,000 psi
Shear reinforcement yield stress (fys) = 50,000 psi
Concrete cylinder strength (fcʹ) = 3,000 psi
Ultimate stress of steel (Fu) = 58,000 psi
Yield stress of steel (Fy) = 36,000 psi
ASSUME Bearing capacity of soil at (- 10’-0’’) = 1 TSF

3. Required Data for Loading

The applied loads are gravity loads (dead loads, superimposed
dead loads, live loads) and lateral loads (wind loads).

3.1. Dead Load

Dead load is a fixed position service load, so called because it
acts continuously toward the earth when the structure is in service.
Dead load consists of the structural frame’s own weight and other
loads that are permanently attached to the frame.
Required data for dead loads are as follows:
Unit weight of concrete = 150 pcf
9 in thick brick wall weight = 100 psf
4.5 in thick brick wall weight = 55 psf
Superimposed dead load = 20 psf

3.2. Live Load

Live load is load that may change in magnitude and location.
Live load may be either static or they may have a dynamic effect. Live
loads that move under their own
power, such as people, trucks, vehicles are said to be moving loads.
Required data for live loads are as follows:
Live load on residential = 40 psf
Live load on stair = 100 psf
Live load on lobby = 100 psf
Live load on roof = 20 psf
Unit weight of water = 62.4 pcf

3.3. Wind Load

Every building or structure and every portion thereof shall be
designed and constructed to resist the wind effect. The force exerted
by winds on buildings increase dramatically with the increase in
building heights. On any typical building of rectangular plan and
elevation, wind exert pressure on the windward side and suction on
the leeward side, as well as either uplift or downward pressure on
3

the roof. The wind pressure on a structure depends on the wind

velocity, height, exposure, and dynamic response of the structure.
Required Data in designing for wind load are as follows:
Exposure type = Type B
Windward wall pressure coefficient = 0.8
Leeward wall pressure coefficient = 0.5
Basic wind speed = 80 mph
Overall height = 33 ft
Effective width = 80 ft
Effective length = 150 ft
Method used = Normal Force Method
Importance factor = 1.0

3.4. Earthquake Load

Potentially damaging ground movements produced by the sudden
release of energy along faults in the earth’s crust is called
Earthquake. The application to structural motions caused by earthquake
ground shaking is demonstrated. Earthquake load consists of the
inertial forces of building mass that result from the shaking of its
foundation by a seismic disturbance.
Required data for seismic loads are as follows:
Seismic zone = III
Frame type = IMRF
Site Class = B
Ss = 1.32
S1 = 0.53
I = 1.0
Ct = 0.028
R = 5.5

6. Load Combinations
The design load combinations are the various combinations of
the load cases for which the structure needs to be checked. For
ACI318-05 and IBC-06 code, if a structure is subjected to dead load
(DL), superimposed dead load (SD), live load (LL), wind load (W),
and earthquake load (EQ), considering that wind and earthquake forces
are reversible.
Design load combinations for proposed structure are as follows:
(1) 1.4DL + 1.4SD
(2) 1.4DL + 1.4SD + 1.7LL
(3) 1.2DL + 1.2SD + LL + 1.6WX
