This lesson plan teaches 6th grade students about budgeting using multi-digit decimals in Microsoft Excel. Students will be given a monthly budget amount and asked to create a spending plan in Excel. As they allocate funds across categories, they will practice adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing multi-digit decimals. The lesson incorporates universal design for learning principles to engage students and allow alternative forms of expression. It is assessed through students' accurate use of multi-digit decimals in their Excel budgets.

Lesson Idea Name: Budgeting Using Multi-Digit Decimals

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 6th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE6.NS.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard
algorithm for each operation.

Technology Standard Addressed:

ISTE Standards for Students: Standard 5 (Computational Thinker) Students develop and employ strategies for
understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop
and test solutions. 5A: Students formulate problem definitions suited for technology-assisted methods such
as data analysis, abstract models and algorithmic thinking in exploring and finding solutions.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Excel

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Using the engagement UDL principle within this lesson idea, all students will be challenged to
show their understanding of multi-digit decimals using Microsoft Excel. Students will become excited knowing
they can choose categories in where they will spend their money during this activity, this will increase student
engagement within the classroom.
Representation: Using the representation UDL principle within this lesson idea, all students will be able to
access content through phones, tablets, and computers. Students can access to this activity at all times.
Action and Expression: Using the action and expression UDL principle within this lesson idea, all students will
be able to demonstrate their understanding of multi-digit decimals through an alternative way. This would be
different than using the basic textbook use of testing knowledge.
Lesson idea implementation: During this lesson, students will be asked to create their monthly spending plan
based off a budget amount given by the teacher. Microsoft Excel will be used, so that students can complete
this task. Teachers will act as facilitators within the classrooms as some students may need help with using
multi-digit decimals within Microsoft Excel. This project will be introduced after a lesson is given on how
multi-digit decimals work within mathematics. This project will take between 1 to 2 days to complete.

Students learning will be assessed through the use of multi digit decimals created within Microsoft Excel, it
will tell whether students do or do not have an understanding of what multi-digit decimals are and how they
work within mathematics. Student learning is at the highest learning level because students are asked to

show their understanding of content taught using a computer software program. The lesson will be concluded
by having a brief discussion with students on what they learned about multi-digit decimals while using this
software. Students will be given feedback on their work through a graded rubric completed by the teacher.
Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activities created could impact student learning
because it would be able to show students’ understanding of content taught and it would show an increase in
students’ skills in mathematics. This activity would be considered a continuation activity because it will be a
continuation of a further discussion on the use of multi-digit decimals within mathematics. This lesson is as
extended as it can be, and it test students’ understanding of content learned at the highest level. There are no
other technological tools that could further enhance this project.
