Buddhist Influence
Relics found in the area also prove the existence of a Buddhist empire in the region. Kalinga
later lost the territory to King Ashoka in the bloodiest battle of its time, which prompted
Ashoka to embrace Buddhism. Visakhapatnam is surrounded by ancient Buddhist sites,
most of which have been excavated recently and illustrate the legacy of Buddhism in the
region.

NAD Flyover

NAD Flyover is expected to bring about a much-needed change in the area which
experiences heavy vehicular traffic. Being a prime junction in the city, NAD, over the years,
has been witnessing high levels of congestion and the upcoming flyover, which is taking
shape thick and fast, is one of the much-awaited upcoming projects.
Hawkers Zone
In what might turn out to be a huge relief for the denizens of Visakhapatnam, the Greater
Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) identified hawkers zones in the city. The
step is expected to reduce congestion on roads and facilitate smoother traffic
flow. Reportedly, the GVMC has identified 11 vendor zones in the city and has sought
inputsfor setting up hawkers zones at these locales.

Flyover at Convent Junction

In addition to the upcoming flyover at NAD junction, Vizag’s Convent junction too would
soon be having a new flyover to ease out the traffic in the area. With Port Trust
Chairman M.T Krishna Babu’s efforts paying a dividend, the officials of National
Highways Authority of India handed over the construction responsibilities of the flyover to
M.V.R Infra.

Underground Parking facility

The underground parking is proposed to be extended up to YMCA and also including the
area behind Rajiv Smriti Bhavan and in front of the Andhra University Convention Centre.
The parking area is likely to stretch over 1.1 km and width of 18 meters to lodge close to
900 cars and 300 to 400 two-wheelers.

Underground Cabling
Vizag is all set to get underground electrical cables installed in the coming days. The authorities
say that the project will help in withstanding devastations caused by the natural calamities
Underground cabling when put in place, is expected to ensure that the impact of natural calamities
on important utilities is minimized and therefore damage is reduced. Although the project’s
foundation stone long ago, the works have got underway recently.
