MĀLIKĀROPAṆAM
The exchange of garlands symbolises the union of two different souls into one. During this event, the bride
and the groom are lifted by their maternal uncles and they make it difficult for the bridegroom or the bride to
garland each other by moving forwards and backwards. All this is done to ease the tension and bring the two
different groups closer.
TAṆḌULA ABHIKṢEPAṆAM
GŪḌAJĪRIKĀ PRAKṢEPAṆAM VIDHIḤ
Some communites hold a curtain between the couple and recite the maṅgala aṣṭakam — thereafter the couple
sprinkle either rice or jaggery & jeera on each others' heads
DOLĀROHAṆA VIDHIḤ
After exchange of garlands the bride and the groom sit on a decorated swing (ūñjal). The performance of
this ceremony has a great significance. Though two separate chains hold the swing, their origin is the same.
This symbolically signifies that the couple jointly face progression and retrogression in life. It gives
confidence that they should face the oscillation of life together sitting in the same plank sharing their joy and
sorrow together.
A minimum of five ladies or groups of ladies in odd numbers go round the ūñjal. They carry water to clear
the surroundings and light lamps to invoke the goddess Lakṣmī there.
Rice balls coloured red and yellow are swung around the couple and then thrown in four directions to
eliminate negative vibrations.
After this 2 ladies carrying a vessel with a lamp and three ladies carrying jars full of water alternately walk
around the couple pouring the water continously on the ground.
All five do ārati to the couple and pour the remaining water on the ground.
