Question from instructor:

What has been the biggest leap in learning?(Student perspective)

In order to answer this question more accurately I decided to interview one of my students. I

want to keep the students identity anonymous so I will refer to them as knucklehead. Knucklehead and

myself have developed a relationship different than mine and any other students. Knucklehead has been

sent to in school suspension four times and out of school suspension twice. Knucklehead is academically

very intelligent but allows their behavior to limit their ability to express that. This student often works

with me in a one on one setting so I may guide them to stay on track, but not because they need

assistance to complete the work. I wasn’t sure how to question the student to get the information for

the question I need an answer in my journal, so I asked three questions in order to do so.

1. As I have spent more time teaching the whole classroom have you noticed an increase in

participation?

Knucklehead responded to this question by saying that at first the students would pay attention because

they thought I would be fun. He said that personally he thought I was more of a guest presenter than a

second teacher. He said after I started teaching math every day the students thought I was a math

teacher and wanted to show their understanding daily. He said he thought it was strange when I took

over for the 10 days, but thought I did better than most substitutes do.

2. Do you feel I show mastery of the subjects I’m teaching?

Knucklehead respond to this question by saying it doesn’t feel like I’m teaching subjects, it feels like I’m

relating stories to lessons. I asked him to elaborate what he meant by that. He said that I talk about my

life outside of the classroom, and then talk about why students should know what I’m about to teach

them to help them outside of the classroom in the situations. When I asked him whether or not that was

a good thing he responded by saying “You must know what you’re talking about if you’re using in your

life.” Although he didn’t answer the question directly, I felt complemented by his answer.

3. Do you feel throughout the semester I have positively impacted your learning?

Knucklehead responded to this by simply saying yes. I asked him if I impacted his learning because of my

teaching style or because of our personal relationship. He said both. I feel for knucklehead, that he

doesn’t receive one on one attention outside of the classroom, and because I gave it to him in the

classroom he showed his appreciation through his effort in his academic work. I don’t know that all the

students in the classroom would say yes for the reason that knucklehead did, but I felt my effort went

noticed and appreciated with this particular student. In my opinion his greatest leapin learning came

after we developed a relationship. I wouldn’t say I made an effort to become his friend, but instead a

role model. I don’t want to speak to myself as a role model in terms of an exemplary person, I just

wanted to show knucklehead that even as an adult I took an interest in what interest in him.
