Lab6 Apr12

This document provides instructions for a thin shell finite element analysis assignment using SAP2000 software. Students are asked to analyze a hemispherical concrete shell with given dimensions, material properties and boundary conditions, using 4-node shell elements. They must determine deflections and internal forces for an initial coarse mesh, then refine the mesh in critical regions and re-analyze to obtain more accurate results. All requested output must be submitted before leaving the computer lab class.

Analysis of Shells
=================================================================================

Using SAP2000 FEA software do the following thin shell problem using 4 node
quadrilateral isoparametric elements. Use shell template to build your model.
Submit the requested results before leaving the lab class.

Thin Shell Problem

A hemispherical concrete shell has a mean radius of 10 m and thickness of 250 mm.
The shell is fixed at the base and is subjected to its self-weight.
Properties of concrete are; Density = 7849 kg/m3, E = 25 GPa, and v = 0.2
Use 16 divisions in the angular direction and 8 divisions in the vertical (Z) directions.

!. For this mesh, determine the vertical deflection at the top and the maximum and
minimum meridional and longitudinal forces and moments in the shell.

2. Considering the critical stress regions, subdivide the shell elements to smaller
elements and find the above.
