This document provides guidelines for writing a laboratory report for Chemistry 26.1. It outlines the key sections of the report, including an abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. For each section, it provides brief descriptions of the essential components and level of detail required. Tips in Writing the Laboratory Report (Formal Paper) in Chem 26.

Abstract (5 points)

 It should be no less than 250 words and not more than 300 words.
 You give a general picture about the focus of the experiment, important procedures done, observations
gathered and the implication/generalization from your data.
 You should also include a final statement parallel to the objective of the experiment.

Introduction (5 points)

 You write deductively, meaning start from general to specific.

 Give a background/picture about the main focus of the experiment.
 Do not forget to cite the author of the book/journal/ article where you copied some
definitions/statement.
 You are also advised to write using your own words or understanding (paraphrase) about a specific
content that you may want to highlight.
 End this part with the objectives of the experiment from your laboratory manual.

Materials and Methods (5 points)

 You may present this through a figure/chart/picture of the set-up supported by a thorough discussion.
 Do not directly copy the procedure in the laboratory manual.
 Discuss using your own understanding and your own writing style.

Results (5 points)

 Present the data gathered through a table/chart. Do not just present a table without a short discussion
on what is implied by the table. (e.g. some of you would just introduce the table as “Table 5 shows the
calculated weights of the samples” without further discussion )
 If you have 3 tables then you have to have 3 discussions as well.
 Do not fabricate your data in the hope of having high scores. Whatever you have observed or gathered
in the lab should be presented as is.

Discussions (10 points)

 Discuss the results of the study comprehensively. If there are errors or if you think the data is not close
to what is supposed to be observed/gathered then you may explain why such data came out. For
example, a very high value of RSD was computed then you have to explain the possible source of error.
That is more acceptable than changing your data.
 In giving further explanation regarding the result of your experiment, it is also good to cite authors from
your literature readings.

Conclusion (5 points)

 This should highlight the objectives of the study.
