This document provides information about subnetting including the number of subnets and hosts available at different subnet mask bit lengths. It also includes an example of how Variable Length Subnet Masking (VLSM) can be used to efficiently allocate addresses across multiple subnets within the same Class B network. Specifically, it shows how a /18, /19, /20, /21, and /22 subnet can be created from the 172.16.128.0/17 network to support 16,382, 8,190, 4,094, 2,046 and 1,022 hosts respectively.
