1. Photons have a wavelength of 500nm. (The symbol nm is defined as a nanometer =


1010m). What is the energy of this photon, and what is the type of the electromagnetic
wave in this case?
2. A positron collides head on with an electron and both are annihilated. Each particle has a
kinetic energy of 1.00 MeV. Find the wavelength of the resulting photons.
3. Express the Planck radiation formula in terms of wavelength.
4. Find the energy of a 700 nm photon.
5. Find the wavelength and frequency of a 100 MeV photon.
6. Under favorable circumstances the human eye can detect 1X10-18 J of electromagnetic
energy. How many 600 nm photons does it represent?
7. What is the maximum wavelength of light that will cause photoelectrons to be emitted
from sodium. What will be maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons be if 200nm
light falls on a sodium surface. (work function of sodium is 2.3 eV).
8. The work function of a tungsten surface is 5.4 eV. When the surface is illuminated by light
of wavelength 175 nm, the maximum photoelectron energy is 1.7 eV. Find Planck’s
constant from these data.
9. A beam of X rays is scattered by a target at 45 ֩ from the beam direction the scattered X-
rays have a wavelength of 2.2 pm. What is the wavelength of the X-rays in the direct beam.
10. Consider the emission of electrons due to photoelectric effect from a zinc plate. The work
function of zinc is known to be 3.6 eV. What is the maximum energy of electrons
ejected when ultra-violet light of wavelength 3000 ˚A is incident on the zinc plate?
11. In an photoelectric effect experiment, ultraviolet light of wavelength 320 nm falls on the
photocathode with work function of 2.1 eV. Find the kinetic energy of photo electron and
stopping potential.

Estimate the numerical value of the planck's constant, (b) Calculate the work function and
the cutoff frequency of lead.
