Minimalism
• Musical style which includes consonant harmony, steady pulse, gradual transformation, and often reiteration
of musical motifs. It has its roots in eastern music.
• Also called Minimal music, Process music, Phase music, Pulse music, Systemic music, Repetitive music
• Originated in the 1950’s and established itself in 1964 with Terry Riley’s piece “In C”
• Phasing: Compositional technique which a motif or phrase is played on two or more instruments in steady
tempo, but slightly different speed.
Steve Reichs
• Innovations: Tape loops, phasing, simple audible musical processes
• Obtained a Grammy for “Different Trains”, in 2007 a Polar Music Prize, in 2009 a Pulitzer Prize for Music
• Studied with Luciano Berio, Darius Milhaud, Vincent Persichetti
• Worked at the San Francisco Tape Music Center with Pauline Oliveros, Morton Subotnick, and Terry Riley
• Works: Come Out, Piano Phase, New York Counterpoint, Clapping Music, Drumming, Different Trains, Electric
Counterpoint, etc.
John Adams
• Studied with Roger Sessions and David Del Tredici at Harvard
• Greatly influenced by the music of Steve Reich
• His music contains musical elements of Romanticism
• Obtained the Pulitzer Price for Music in 2003
• Works: Nixon in China, Harmonium, Shaker Loops, Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Doctor Atomic, On the
Transmigration of Souls, etc.
Morton Feldman
• Pointillistic approach to minimalism
• Influenced by the music of Anton Webern
• Taught at University of Buffalo, SUNY, and then University of California in San Diego
• Experimented with non-standard systems of musical notation
• Works: Rhotko Chapel, Triadic Memories, etc.
John Taverner
• British composer, same name with the 1500 composer
• His work Song for Athene was perform at the funeral of Princess Diana
• Highly influenced by Orthodox faith
• Acclaimed Bjork as a creative composer
• Works: The Whale, The Protecting Veil, Song for Athene, The Lamb, etc.
Avro Parts
• Estonian composer most performed in the world for three consecutive years as of 2013
• Used his technique “tintinnabuli”
