1) The following table shows the advertising budget in Euros and

units sold:
Advertising Budget
(Euros) 01 01 01 01 01 111
Units sold 111 111 001 1111 011 001

Using any application program (Excel or MATLAB), write down the

formula required for:

3) A company offers five services and asks customers to rank them

according to quality and cost as in the following table:
Service
V W X Y Z
Quality ranking 2 5 1 3 4
Cost ranking 1 3 2 4 5
Is there a link between quality and cost? Solve mathematically,
and then write down the formula required for the application
program (Excel or MATLAB).
Solution
 Numerical Solution:

A value of 0.6 suggests some relationship between quality and

cost, but not very strong one.
 Using MATLAB:

 There is no function to calculate spearman's coefficient of rank

correlation in Excel program.

3) The following table shows the advertising budget in Euros and

units sold:
Week 1 0 0 0 1 0 7 0 0 11
Sale 17 00 01 00 00 07 11 10 00 71

Using any application program (Excel or MATLAB), write down the

formula required for:
1. rsquare – MSE
2. Regression Coefficients (beta)
3. Use the linear regression to forecast demand for the next three
weeks and week 30
4. Formulate the response and predictor in dataset, and explain
the result.

4) The following table shows the advertising budget in Euros and

units sold:
Advertising Budget (Euros) 0111 0111 0111 0111 0111 11111
Units sold 111 711 711 1111 1111 1011

Using any application program (Excel or MATLAB), write down the

formula required for:
i. Calculating the correlation coefficient.
ii. Calculating mean square error.
iii. Forecasting the number of units sold with an advertising budget
of 15000 Euros using the line of best fit through the above data.

5)The following data represents the car value in the thousands of

pounds. It value changes with mileage (kilometer in thousands) and
age (in years):
Kilometer 5 10 30 40 55 70 80 100
Age 2 3 5 6 8 10 11 12
Value 230 220 195 175 160 135 115 90

Find the following using MATLAB:

1. Coefficient of determination ( rsquare) & MSE.
2. Regression Coefficients (beta).
3. Use the linear regression to forecast car's value for age = (13,
15, 18) and kilometer = (105000, 115000, 125000).
4. Formulate the response and predictor in dataset, and explain
the result.
