Ⅰ Overview
Mission
The College of Civil Engineering (CCE) at Tongji University is devoted to educate future
leaders in the engineering profession or the academic community. CCE concentrates on
cutting-edge researches, defining what constitutes the evolving domain of civil engineering.
These researches develop theories as well as tools and techniques for professional practice to
solve societal problems. CCE exhibits great service through the actions of its members and
collectively, contributing expertise where needed.

Our Ph.D. program aims to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of science and
engineering combined with technical expertise in specialized areas of the field. Doctoral studies
consist of courses selected for the individual in consultation with a faculty guidance committee
and successful completion of an independent research culminating in a thesis. The educating
activities are in English environment.

Ⅱ Qualified Applicants
CCE offers admissions to applicants who appear to have potential for doctoral study and to
substantially contribute to their academic or professional fields through teaching, research, or
professional practice with the benefit of a graduate education.

A qualified applicant should:

 hold a non-Chinese passport for at least four years and have lived outside of China for at least
two years within the past four years;

  have received a master’s degree from an accredited institution or recognized equivalent;
 have sufficient undergraduate education for doctoral study in the chosen field;
 stay in good academic standing, a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 5.0 scale;

 demonstrate English proficiency through a valid record of either the Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System
(IELTS), only if the applicant is from non-English-speaking countries. A valid TOEFL
score is 90 (120 scale) or higher on the internet-based test for a graduate admission, while
a valid overall Band score of IELTS is 6.5 or higher on a 9-point scale. TOEFL or IELTS
can be waived for those whose education environment is English or the contact advisor at
Tongji University strongly acknowledges his/her English proficiency.

Application for enrollment in Sept 2018 opens on 1st Feb 2018 and closes on 31st Mar 2018.

Ⅳ Application Support Documents

1. Diploma
Applicants graduated from academic institutes outside of China should hold a degree equivalent
to a Chinese master's degree. Equivalency is determined by International evaluators in the
Graduate Admissions Office.

2. Transcripts
Official transcripts or academic records for master degree study that has been completed are
required. If the academic records do not include official evidence of the award of a degree, one
must also submit additional documents that verify the degree conferral.

Academic records should be issued in the original language and accompanied by English
translations if required (usually prepared by your university or government agency, unless the
institution issues original documents in English). In general, records or transcripts must be
issued by the school and include the school’s stamp or embossed seal and the signature of the
authorizing official. For more detailed information on acceptable documents, please contact
CCE or International Student Office.

3. Evidence of English Proficiency

All applicants from non-English-speaking countries are required to submit official evidence of
English proficiency. This requirement applies to applicants from Bangladesh, Nepal, India,
Pakistan, Latin America, the Middle East, Israel, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and
non-English-speaking countries in Europe and Africa.

You may select either TOEFL or IELTS. The MOST RECENT score (taken during the past two
years) must meet the minimum requirement. Applicants who fail to meet the minimum will not
be admitted. TOEFL or IELTS can be waived for those whose education environment is English
or the contact advisor at Tongji University strongly acknowledges his/her English proficiency.

If you have completed at least one year of full-time academic course work with grades of B or

 better at a recognized Chinese institution, you do not need to take a standardized English test.
Instead, you need to submit the transcript that verifies your course work in the Chinese
institution.

4. Personal Statement
The Personal Statement is your opportunity to clearly establish professional interests and career
objectives, and to state your reasons for pursuing your discipline of interest in CCE at Tongji
University rather than other institutions. It should also discuss your background, including
research and professional experience, unique aspects of your academic record, honors,
memberships and extracurricular activities.

5. Recommendations
At lease two letters of recommendation from referees with full professorship or equivalent are
required for review (one should be issued by the applicant's master thesis research advisor）.
The referees are encouraged to give their personal impressions on the applicant’s intellectual
ability, attitude in research professional skills, personal characters, quality of previous work and
potential for future productive scholarship.

5. Admission decisions are made according to an interview in addition to a comprehensive

departmental and university level review on academic records, the personal statement, letters of
recommendation, transcripts, and relevant work experience. CCE also considers the
appropriateness of applicants’ goals to the degree program and to the research interests of the
faculty. No written entrance examinations will be required.

Ⅵ Financial Aid, Accommodation and Insurance Requirements

Once an applicant is admitted, CCE will offer him/her a full scholarship, which includes a full
tuition waiver and an annually stipend of 50,000 – 100,000 RMB during the period of study.

Accommodation
Every admitted applicant is eligible to apply a one bedroom flat in our on-campus dormitory
building during his/her period of study. However, on-campus accommodation is provided based
on the availability of rooms and may not be guaranteed. The accommodation fee is waived.

Insurance
An appropriate insurance is required for every admitted applicant to enroll into Tongji
University. The insurance fee cannot be waived if not included in the scholarship. Please
purchase the insurance as early as possible to avoid the delay in the enrollment.

Ⅶ Enrollment
1) Keep track on your application process in the Apply Online System. Once you are admitted
by Tongji University, the admission status will change. The admission notice and visa
documents (JW202 Form) will be sent off in middle July.

 2) Admitted applicants should bring their Passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form
(JW202) to the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China, and apply for a student
visa (X visa). Students shall come to Tongji University for registration before the deadline
indicated on the Admision Notice. The X visa holders must apply for a Residence Permit within
30 days after arrival in China.

3) Enrolled PhD candidates should pass the qualified exam generally in the first academic year
in order to continue the program.
