New Hardware – Converged/40G “D-Series”
Shelves
• Dimensionally identical to their predecessors
• There is no fan shelf, it is integrated in the main shelf
• New backplane with extra backplane tracks
• 22.5G service to the XC to/from any service slot as well as 40G card-to-card and
triplet broadband configurations
• New fibre management tray that includes modifications to accommodate the
following:
• Fibre routing channels are provided for slots 7 and 8 (which until recent release were
used only for XC circuit packs which didn’t have any faceplate fibre connectivity)
• Channels for electrical cable management associated with slots 1 and 14 to allow for
routing of two RJ-45 Category 5 Ethernet cables to each of those slots. These
channels are separated from the fibre routing area and can be used to connect to the
two Wayside Ethernet ports found on the 2xOSC (Optical Service Channel) circuit
pack (which are normally equipped in slots 1 and 14 for this reason).

• Reduces cost/complexity of sparing since all new deployments can


use the Converged shelf and Common Equipment regardless of the
configuration and future upgrade plans
• Can be equipped with any existing common equipment (i.e., 40A
Power Cards, Access Panel, Maintenance Interface Card, Shelf
Processor and Fan modules) except for the following existing common
equipment: Maintenance Interface Card with PEC NTK505FA and Fan
modules with PECs: NTK507*A, NTK507*B, and NTK507K*)
• Can be equipped with the new common equipment introduced in Rel.
5.0 (i.e., 60A Power Cards, High Flow Cooling modules and SONET
Access Panel with connections for 8 External slots)
• The Converged shelf only operates with Rel. 5 or higher software

New Hardware – 60A Power Input Card, con’t

• If an OME6500 shelf is equipped with 60A Power Input Cards,


there is no restriction on the number of circuit packs that can
be provisioned, of any type including the 40G circuit packs
planned for a future OME release.
• Operates from -40V to -75V DC
• Power card includes fastener to secure it to the shelf

C-series inventory support, the shelf must be running Rel. 5.0

and supply power to the “A” feed with one Rectifier
kit, and the “B” feed with the second Rectifier kit

• Each rectifier shelf shall be fed by two separate single-phase AC

• Designed to cool OME circuit packs that dissipate 150

• SuperMux circuit packs can be equipped in slots 1 to 14, except 7 or 8 if any of these slots have XC/MXC circuit packs
provisioned
• 14 SuperMux circuit packs per shelf are supported when using 60A Power Cards (note that 60A Power Cards are only
supported in C-series and D-series shelves). When using 40A Power Cards, the recommended maximum is 12 SuperMux
circuit packs per shelf. 14 SuperMux circuit packs per shelf is permitted when using 40A Power Cards provided the following:
• Both power feeds are present and providing power within the operating range of the system or one feed is working and
providing at least -41V dc in order to provide a system power budget of 1639W (in a double fault scenario where only
one feed is working and it drops below -41V dc, there is a potential that the circuit breaker or panel fuse associated with
the feed may trip as 40A may be exceeded)
• The system cannot be upgraded with circuit packs planned in future releases without special consideration of the
impact on the power budget.

• Maximum 10G on the DWDM line port (port 1)

• The 10G maximum on the OC-n/STM-n client facilities is based on the rate provisioned on the client

apply for provisioning OC-n/STM-n client facilities:
• An OC-3/STM-1 facility uses the same amount of facility resources as an OC-12/STM-4 facility
• Up to four OC-3/STM-1 and/or OC-12/STM-4 facilities can be provisioned in place of a single OC-
48/STM-16 facility
• So when provisioning OC-n/STM-n client facilities, you can provision up to four OC-48/STM-16
facilities or, in place of each individual OC-48/STM-16 facility you can provision up to four OC-3/STM-
1 and/or OC-12/STM-4 facilities.
• The 10G maximum on the GbE/FC client ports is based on the cross-connections provisioned
against the GbE/FC client port facilities. A GbE port uses STS-3c-7V, or 21 STS-1's. An FC-100 port
uses STS-3c-6v, or 18 STS-1's. An FC-200 port uses STS-3c-12v or 36 STS-1's. The NE adds up the
total bandwidth provisioned based on cross-connections and allows you to add a facility if there is
sufficient GbE/FC bandwidth remaining.

Synchronization Group Management & Provisioning
• The SuperMux does not require a shelf XC circuit pack in order to carry traffic. This means the
SuperMux is capable to time independently from the shelf.
• The concept of timing groups is used to support XC-independent synchronization. Certain circuit
packs in a shelf can group together to manage their own synchronization. Each group can decide
how it wants to synchronize.
• There are two categories of timing groups:
• Main shelf timing group (timing is managed by shelf XC’s)
• Independent timing group (timing is managed by the group provisioning)
• An OME shelf with XC circuit packs and existing tributary circuit packs (e.g., OCn’s) form the main
shelf timing group. Circuit packs that cannot form independent timing groups (e.g., existing OCn’s)
are part of the shelf timing group by default. This group has its own references and timing modes for
both timing generation and timing distribution (BITS). This group always exists if XC circuit packs are
seated in the shelf.
• Independent (i.e. non-shelf) timing groups can consist of one to three circuit packs. The make-up of
the timing group is controlled by provisioning.
• Independent timing groups support the following timing modes:
• Shelf XC (time from the shelf XC as a typical tributary)
• Internal (time from an unlocked Generic Synchronization Block local to the timing group)
• Line (time from a line local to the timing group)

Equipment provisioning validation based on
shelf cooling capacity
• In the Site Manager Node Information System tab, new shelf attributes MINCOOLING and
ACTUALCOOLING are introduced to indicate the minimum cooling requirements of the shelf
• ACTUALCOOLING indicates the actual cooling state of the shelf, either high flow cooling
(HIGHFLOW) or low flow cooling (LOWFLOW). ACTUALCOOLING is not user provisionable and is
automatically set to HIGHFLOW only if 3 High Flow cooling fan modules are detected in the shelf.
ACTUALCOOLING defaults to LOWFLOW otherwise.
• In order to manually or automatically provision equipment that requires high flow cooling (in this
release, only SuperMux requires high flow cooling),
• 1)The shelf must be equipped with 3 High Flow cooling modules (this means that the shelf has set the
ACTUALCOOLING parameter to HIGHFLOW), or
• 2)The shelf is equipped with 1 or more Regular Flow cooling modules and you have set the
MINCOOLING parameter to HIGHFLOW. This should not be done under normal conditions. To warn
users about this,
• The fan “Equipment Configuration Mismatch” alarm is raised against any Regular Flow cooling modules that
are present in the shelf. The fan “Equipment Configuration Mismatch” alarm is not user provisionable.
• The MINCOOLING attribute can be set from HIGHFLOW to LOWFLOW only if all equipment that requires
high flow cooling (in this release, SuperMux equipment) has first been deleted from the shelf.
• Note: Attempts to provision such equipment when both MINCOOLING and ACTUALCOOLING are set to
LOWFLOW is blocked and the ‘Provisioning Incompatible’ alarm is raised against that slot.

• The MONITORFAN parameter provides a method to disable fan monitoring on shelves
that have no fan cooling modules
• When MONITORFAN has been disabled, any existing fan alarms are cleared eventhough
the underlying conditions may still be present. Once MONITORFAN is re-enabled, any
existing fan conditions are again alarmed.
• Attribute MINCOOLING can be set from LOWFLOW to HIGHFLOW only if attribute
MONITORFAN is enabled
• Attribute MONITORFAN can be set from ENABLED to DISABLED only if attributes
MINCOOLING and ACTUALCOOLING both have a value of LOWFLOW and any
equipment that requires high flow cooling is neither provisioned nor present in the shelf.
• An upgrade from a previous OME6500 release to Rel. 5.0 results in the MINCOOLING
shelf attribute defaulting to LOWFLOW
• Any High Flow cooling requiring equipment provisioned prior to a software upgrade to
Rel. 5.0 remains provisioned after the upgrade. Any subsequent provisioning of such
equipment is blocked until either MINCOOLING or ACTUALCOOLING has been set to
HIGHFLOW.

Equipment provisioning validation based on
shelf power capacity

• New circuit packs being introduced in the OME platform can consume
more power than existing 40A Power Cards are able to supply when
the shelf is provisioned in a full-filled configuration. The introduction of
these new services to existing shelves can cause the aggregate power
consumption to exceed the overall supply rating. The insertion and
equipping of one more of these high power circuit packs can cause
power to drop or breakers to trip on a shelf with circuit packs already
carrying traffic.
• In order to prevent unexpected shelf power downs or traffic hits,
validation of equipment provisioning based on circuit pack power
consumption and shelf power capacity is required. Provisioning of a
circuit pack is blocked if adding its power consumption value to the
overall shelf power usage causes this total value to approach or
exceed a provisionable shelf power limit value.

EQPTCURRENT and ACTUALPOWER are introduced:
• EQPTCURRENT: indicates the power capacity in Amperes of the Power Cards equipped in the shelf. In
the event of mismatched Power Cards, EQPTCURRENT reflects the power capacity of the lower
amperage Power Card.
• PROVCURRENT: indicates the provisioned power limit of the shelf in Amperes. PROVCURRENT is user
provisionable to the following values 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60, in Amperes. Can be set to a power value
less than or equal to but not greater than EQPTCURRENT. The default value is equal to the
EQPTCURRENT value (i.e. if EQPTCURENT is 60A, PROVCURRENT defaults to 60A).
• ACTUALPOWER: indicates the actual aggregate shelf power usage in Watts. ACTUALPOWER is
indirectly provisionable by the user via provisioning or physical insertion of equipment and is the
summation for all slots of the power consumption value of each slot in the shelf. It also includes
overhead for common equipment. The common equipment overhead is calculated as follows:
• 3 X individual Fan power consumption value (Watts) + Miscellaneous common equipment power consumption
value (Watts), where the individual fan power consumption value is defined as 41 Watts and the
Miscellaneous common equipment power consumption value is defined as 20 Watts.
• All equipment has an associated power consumption value, representing the maximum power
consumed when the equipment is either provisioned or physically present in the shelf.
• The shelf power limit threshold, defined in Watts, is calculated as follows:
• PROVCURRENT (Amps) X Shelf voltage (48V) - 104 W buffer

• In order to manually provision any equipment, the sum of its power consumption value and
ACTUALPOWER must not exceed the shelf power limit threshold. If it does, provisioning of that
equipment is blocked.
• In order to automatically provision any equipment, the sum of its power consumption value and
ACTUALPOWER must not exceed the shelf power limit threshold. If it does, provisioning of that
equipment is blocked and the ‘Provisioning Incompatible’ alarm is raised against that slot.
• If autoprovisioning has been enabled and PROVCURRENT is successfully provisioned to a higher
value, any equipment present in the shelf will attempt to autoprovision, if it has not yet already been
provisioned.
• If a piece of equipment is inserted in the shelf and this slot remains unprovisioned or is successfully
provisioned, its power consumption value is added to ACTUALPOWER. If ACTUALPOWER then
exceeds the shelf power limit threshold, the ‘Shelf Power Near Limit’ alarm is raised.
• If a piece of equipment is physically present and has been deleted from provisioning, its power
consumption value remains as part of ACTUALPOWER. The power consumption value is subtracted
from ACTUALPOWER only when the equipment is physically removed from the shelf and the slot
remains empty and unprovisioned.
• In the event that the equipment physically present in a slot does not match the equipment that is
provisioned for that slot, whichever power consumption value that is greater between the two
equipment types is added to ACTUALPOWER.

Alarms
• The power “Equipment Configuration Mismatch” alarm is raised against any Power Card whose
power capacity is lower than that specified by PROVCURRENT. Since the PROVCURRENT
parameter cannot be set to exceed the EQPTCURRENT parameter, this condition can only occur if
the Power Card is replaced with the wrong type. The alarm clears if the Power Card is replaced with
one whose capacity is greater than PROVCURRENT, or if PROVCURRENT is set to a capacity
equal to or lower than that of the Power Card in question.
• The power “Equipment Configuration Mismatch” alarm is raised against the lower amperage Power
Card in the case of mismatched Power Cards. The alarm clears if the Power Card is replaced with
one whose capacity matches that of the other Power Card.
• The Shelf Power Near Limit alarm is raised when ACTUALPOWER is greater than the shelf power
limit threshold. This alarm clears when ACTUALPOWER no longer exceeds the shelf power limit
threshold.
• The Shelf Power Near Limit alarm is user provisionable
