New Hardware – Converged/40G “D-Series”
Shelves
• Dimensionally identical to their predecessors
• There is no fan shelf, it is integrated in the main shelf
• New backplane with extra backplane tracks
• 22.5G service to the XC to/from any service slot as well as 40G card-to-card and
triplet broadband configurations
• New fibre management tray that includes modifications to accommodate the
following:
• Fibre routing channels are provided for slots 7 and 8 (which until recent release were
used only for XC circuit packs which didn’t have any faceplate fibre connectivity)
• Channels for electrical cable management associated with slots 1 and 14 to allow for
routing of two RJ-45 Category 5 Ethernet cables to each of those slots. These
channels are separated from the fibre routing area and can be used to connect to the
two Wayside Ethernet ports found on the 2xOSC (Optical Service Channel) circuit
pack (which are normally equipped in slots 1 and 14 for this reason).

• Supports all existing alarms and monitor points
• Can be equipped in the D-series and the C-series shelves (for
C-series inventory support, the shelf must be running Rel. 5.0
or higher)
• Power cable is run directly from distribution panel to power
Safety Cover card (no Breaker Interface Panel)
(shipped with the power card)
• Power cable is ordered by the meter (an IRM supply at install).
Power cables are crimp terminated at time of install – there are
no pre-engineered, pre-assembled cables for 60A.

• The new SONET Access Panel with connections for 8 External Slots
inherits all of the existing SONET Access Panel functions and features
except there are no 6.312 MHz SDH-J clock output ports
• Can be equipped in all shelf types and is recognized by shelf inventory
provided the shelf is running Rel. 5 or higher software
• Changes compared to the existing SONET Access Panel:
• Proprietary Serial Interface jacks for up to 8 in-rack External Slots (CMD44,
DSCM modules)
• Consolidation of multiple wire wrap pin fields into one 3x16 pin block
• Use of a DB25 connector instead of wire wrap terminals for the telemetry
inputs and outputs (identical to the existing SDH Access Panel scheme)

• OTN Regen achieved via 2 OTSC card configuration (via backplane interface), no XFPs required
• Line OTU Rate on OTSC circuit packs at regen sites is provisioned to match Line OTU Rate of the SMUX circuit packs (i.e.,
10.709G)
• OTU terminated (SM, TTI, GCC0, BDI, etc)
• ODU passthrough (monitor only)
• Maximum number of regen sites permitted is 24.

• The SuperMux 10G Line-side can be 1+1 protected via a local XC device (not the shelf XC)
• Protection is between 2 mated SuperMux circuit packs
• SONET/SDH Line/MS negotiates K-byte protection protocol
• Uni-directional or Bi-directional nonrevertive protection switching is supported
• Client traffic can come from the odd (left) or the even (right) circuit pack’s clients onto the 1+1 lines
• 50 ms protection switch time
• Note: Unused clients on the odd (left) or the even (right) circuit pack of the protection pair can still be used for
other connections (e.g. client to client)
• The SuperMux OCn/STMn client-side can be 1+1 protected via a local XC device (not the shelf XC)
• Protection is between 2 mate SuperMux circuit packs using the same port number
• SONET/SDH Line/MS negotiates K-byte protection protocol
• Uni-directional or Bi-directional nonrevertive protection switching is supported
• 50 ms protection switch time

• New circuit packs being introduced in the OME platform can consume
more power than existing 40A Power Cards are able to supply when
the shelf is provisioned in a full-filled configuration. The introduction of
these new services to existing shelves can cause the aggregate power
consumption to exceed the overall supply rating. The insertion and
equipping of one more of these high power circuit packs can cause
power to drop or breakers to trip on a shelf with circuit packs already
carrying traffic.
• In order to prevent unexpected shelf power downs or traffic hits,
validation of equipment provisioning based on circuit pack power
consumption and shelf power capacity is required. Provisioning of a
circuit pack is blocked if adding its power consumption value to the
overall shelf power usage causes this total value to approach or
exceed a provisionable shelf power limit value.
