This document describes Lab #1 on a single phase AC-to-DC rectifier for the course ELEE 4120 Introduction to Power Electronics. The objectives are to analyze and test the principle of an AC-to-DC rectifier. Students will set up and test a rectifier circuit, record waveforms at different firing angles, and measure output voltage and input current values to fill in a results table. They will also compare the performance with inductive and resistive loads in a lab report.

Objectives: 1. Analyze and study the principle of the AC-to-DC rectifier 2. Test a single phase AC-to-DC rectifier
Instructions: 1. Three parts in the lab works: preparation, lab testing and lab report 2. Read the content of the AC-to-DC rectifier in the text book 3. The lab content focus on circuit setting up, waveform testing and data recording 4. Preparation should be finished before the lab time and contributes 40% mark of your lab work. It should be signed by the instructor or TA before the lab testing
Part1: Preparation A single phase AC-to-DC rectifier is shown in Fig.1. The input voltage is Vac = 120Vrms. The peak value is Vacpk = 120*1.414 = 170V. The filter inductor value is L = 2.4H. The load resistor value is R = 300Ω. iac is1 L - + S1 vs1 S3 Iout + Vac Vout R

Part 2: Lab testing:
Connect the single phase AC-to-DC rectifier circuit according to Fig. 2. Use data acquisition system to monitor the following waveforms: Vac, Vout, Vs1, Iac, and Iout. Use E1 to monitor Vac, E2 to monitor Vout, E3 to monitor Vs1, I1 to monitor Iac, I2 to monitor Iout. Set ch1 to E1, ch2 to E2, ch3 to E3 and ch4 to I1, ch5 to I2. The SCR gate drive signals are setup according to Fig.3. (1) Use inductive load, L = 2.4H, R = 300Ω. (a) Print out the waveform of Vout, Vs1, Iac, Iout at α = 30° and α = 90°. (b) Measure the average output voltage at α = 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 150° at this condition. Fill in Table 1.
(2) Use resistive load, L = 0H, R = 300Ω. (a) Print out the waveform of Vout, Vs1, Iac, and Iout at α = 30° and α = 90°. (b) Measure the average value of output voltage, Vout, and rms value of input current, Iac, at α = 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 150° at this condition. Fill in Table 1.
