Experiment No: 1: Slotted Link Mechanism Experiment

The experiment investigates the motion of a slotted link mechanism. The apparatus includes a connecting rod, slider, and crank. When the crank rotates, the connecting rod moves back and forth in a reciprocating motion. Measurements were taken of the linear position of the connecting rod at various crank angles from 0-360 degrees. The results showed that the connecting rod's motion follows a simple harmonic pattern, similar to the motion of a piston rod in an engine.

Slotted Link Mechanism Experiment

Objective:
Investigate the motion of a slotted link and to see if the piston rod moves with simple harmonic
motion.

Apparatus:
 Connecting rod
 Slider
 Crank

Theory:
The slotted link mechanism is an example of a quick-return mechanism. This mechanism is a
combination of an inversion of the slider-crank chain and slider block. The unit is assembled
in an anodized aluminum profile structure, with steel painted panel. This is a mechanism able
to transform circular movement into reciprocating movement. It is made of aluminum and
consists of a rotary element called crank, connected to a rigid bar, called connecting rod. When
rotating the crank, the connecting rod moves back and forward. The rotation motion of a crank
or crankshaft causes a rectilinear reciprocating motion of a piston or plunger. It is a reversible
system through which the connecting rod can be displaced by turning the crank and the other
way round. If the connecting rod generates the input motion (as a piston in a car's engine does),
the crank is obliged to rotate.
Applications:
 This setup is most commonly used in control valve actuators in high-pressure oil and
gas pipelines.
 Crude shapers can use Slotted link mechanism. Almost all those use a Whitworth
linkage, which gives a slow speed forward cutting stroke and a faster return.
 It has been used in various internal combustion engines, such as the Bourke engine,
SyTech engine, and many hot air engines and steam engines.

1
Procedure:

 Set the Crank at 0mm for the connecting rod, and 0° for the rotating disk.
 Change the angle for the disk by 20° each time until 360°, and each time measure X .
 Repeat step 1 and 2 for one complete revolution of the crank.
 Plot graphs between the angular displacement on y-axis and the crank angle on x-axis

Conclusion:
As a conclusion, it was found that the slotted link motion is a mechanism to perform a motion
similar to that of a piston rod. The piston rod movement is of a simple harmonic motion because
the point of movement acceleration’s is proportional to its displacement from a fixed point in

its path. The force which is directed towards the crank center achieved its maximum value at
the highest velocity that occurred at 90° and 270°.
