Lesson Twenty-Six
Introduction
Congratulations! You made it through an entire year of training!

One of the great things you get with this lesson is basic MINDSCAPING. This is a remarkable
tool for removing blocks, fixing relationships, tuning up the immune system, etc. Typically
taught at the University of Toronto in Mike’s 2 day trainings, you get the basic method with
this course.

With roots in Jungian symbolism and archetypes, NLP Timelines, the Cube system of
personality (and of course, hypnosis) MINDSCAPING gives you a powerful tool you can use,
even without a formal hypnotic trance.

MINDSCAPING Preframe
It’s really important that you follow the protocol exactly as written! A lot of time and
experimentation created the foundation for these techniques, so it will be to your advantage
to avoid modifying the method.

When Milton Erickson offered metaphors to his patients, he had an uncanny ability to come
up with just the right metaphor for that person at that time. Obviously, this is extremely
difficult to do for the average hypnotist. When you do MINDSCAPING however, the protocol
instructs the subject’s unconscious mind to communicate to you and the subject, the very
metaphor that will unlock the situation.

MINDSCAPING is based on the idea that you have an internal map for every imaginable
purpose, in order for you to navigate through life. For that reason, you need to determine
exactly what it is that the person wants to work on, whether it’s a relationship, immune
system support, an upcoming presentation she needs to make - whatever. Keep it simple.
MINDSCAPING goes very deep and the changes can resonate for days after treatment, so
it’s important that you don’t do too much in one session; especially at the entry level you’re
learning here. (If you wish to get trained in the complete method of MINDSCAPING, check
out MikeMandelHypnosis.com for details as to when the next course will be held.)

Here’s the basic protocol:

1. Identify the issue or problem the person wishes to work on.
2. Have the subject sit up straight in a chair to avoid falling asleep and to help the
process run smoothly.
3. Preframe the existence of a map for each and every purpose, including the
presenting problem. (Use the example of a simplified map of a major city, where
rainfall, electrical grid, etc., would not be necessary in order to enjoy a visit and see
the sights.) You only need to do the preframe in depth in the first session. After that,
you can simplify it by just reminding them of the idea of the correct map for the
situation.
4. Create a trance state. If you wish, you can simply have the subject take 3 long, deep
breaths, and relax. Your subject’s eyes should be closed. Deepening is unnecessary
when MINDSCAPING.
5. Tell the subject that she will be able to communicate with you out loud, without
disturbing the state they’re going to be in.
6. Have the subject imaging a rolled-up map dropping on the floor and unrolling in all
directions, even under the subject’s chair.
7. Have the unconscious permit the map to spring up into full 3D, with all the features
that are there - some natural and some man-made.
8. Have the subject imagine a marker (flag, beacon, arrow, etc.) where their chair is, so
if she happens to move away from the spot, she will flawlessly find her way back. Tell
her that your voice will go with her. Have her nod when it’s in all in place.

Exploring the Map

Remember: It’s crucial to set a marker where the client is currently sitting! Amazingly,
MINDSCAPING has a temporal (time) aspect. In other words, where an object appears on
the mindscape has a relationship to where it is in the person’s life. If you have the person
move around the map without bringing them back to the starting point, they might feel as
though they already have the event that is in their future. Always reorient to the starting place
before bringing them back to here and now.

Also Remember there is no wrong way for the subject to imagine the map. Which ever way
they present their own Mindscape is the correct way for them. There are billions of different
Mindscapes! Assuming you have preframed the Mindscape as the perfect map that depicts
the situation they are currently dealing with, or the issue that they wish to get assistance with.

Here are the key points to running the MINDSCAPING process:

3

‣ Tell the client that their map will be 100% correct for what they’re working on.
‣ Ask the client: What is directly in front of you? This will give you in symbolic form
whatever the subject’s unconscious mind is offering you at that moment in relation to
their problem or situation. Sometimes, it will be obvious to you what the unconscious
mind of the subject is presenting in the Mindscape. Resist the temptation to interpret
for them. It’s crucial that they only learn from the map whatever they figure out for
themselves. Often, the client will describe a barrier or wall, which is an obvious
metaphor of something holding them back.
‣ Ask the client one of these key questions, that you’ll use again and again to elicit
information:

What does that remind you of?

How does that make you feel?

These are very useful questions that facilitate exploration of the Mindscape. They will provide
you with all you need to help the client resolve the problem, or at least gain new
understandings of it.

Here are some beginners’ questions that you should not use:

Is your spouse on the map too?

What represents your career on the Mindscape?

Do you see anything scary?

These sorts of questions are far too directive and will bog things down and bring confusion.
Remember that it’s their Mindscape, not yours. Honour their particular way of mapping their
life and challenges.

Key Point:

Some people think they can’t visualize. If you speak too much in visual terms, they’ll begin to
object. For this reason, it’s better for you to say “What is directly in front of you?” rather than
“What do you see in front of you?” A bit of practice will make the avoidance of too much
visual questioning second nature.

Compass Points
‣ The direction the client is facing will indicate what’s in their future and what they’re
dealing with. The closer an object or map feature, the closer it is to the subject, both
in importance and time. The further away something is, the longer it will take for them
to reach it. The structure directly in front will be what they’re dealing with, based on
your preframe!
‣ Whatever the client imagines as being behind him, is the thing or things he’s moving
away from and leaving behind. Obviously, if the client sees the space behind him as
lush forests and gardens, she perceives the past as being pleasant; at least in relation
to this issue. Equally obvious, if the client perceives tendrils or chains coming from
behind and gripping him or his chair, the past still has a great hold on him.
‣ The sides of a Mindscape will often be purely ornamental. Seldom if ever will you find
anything of importance here. These are side-issues and do not have any bearing on
the subject’s situation.
‣ The distant horizon in front of the person will be distant goals and dreams. Sometimes
you have to have the subject float up high in order to “see” what’s there beyond any
obstacles.
‣ The sky and heights (mountains, towers, etc) tend to evoke spiritual or idealistic
imagery and desires.

Warning!
Stay above ground! Even if you stumble upon tunnels, stairs going downward, and similar
things, do not take the client down below the surface. This is where deep psychological
urges, trauma, etc., can reside. Without the full 2 day MINDSCAPING training, it is not safe
for you to send the client below the surface. Although this can be fascinating, there are lots
of things you can do without delving below the surface. Check out the website for information
on MINDSCAPING live training in Toronto, if this is something you wish to learn.

Remember: Ecology first!

Key Point

It’s a very good idea to let the client know from the beginning that if their unconscious mind
doesn’t like any of the changes you’re making, it can simply reverse them later. After all, it’s
in the unconscious mind’s best interest to give the subject a good life. By presenting these
changes and shifts as something that can be tried on for awhile, it will typically have no
objection to the shifts you make.

Remember to make it fun and enjoyable. Most people find it fascinating to explore the maps
that used to be out of their awareness. Once you have a description into what’s in front, have
the subject imagine that he spins his chair around and faces backwards. Ask what’s there
and how it makes him feel.

Never interpret for the subject. If he sees storms and lightning, you might be tempted to say
that it sounds scary. He however, might simply see it as exciting and challenging. Let the
subject interpret things by asking how it makes him or her feel.

Simply eliciting the map and bringing it to their awareness can have all sorts of immensely
positive changes. In other words, you don’t necessarily have to do anything, but help the
subject explore the map that their unconscious mind presents. The new understanding this
brings can be very helpful.

Landscaping the Internal World

Making changes to the internal map, can have a profound effect on the person’s state and
life. A little goes a long way. In fact, if you attempt to change too much at once, you’ll
probably lose rapport with the subject’s unconscious mind and the changes will revert to the
old map. Be subtle and gentle with the changes you make; always ensure the client is
comfortable with them, before moving on.

Global Changes

One thing you can do is change the sky. This is a safe and powerful shift you can make
routinely, provided you check for ecology.

‣ If the sky is gloomy, try brightening it.

‣ If the area behind the subject has a brighter sky than what’s in front, then see what
happens if the subject brightens the sky that’s in front of him.
‣ You can change the colour of the sky and add a rainbow, if the client indicates this is
okay.
Ask: How does that make you feel? Adjust until it feels right for the client.

Have the subject rise up straight into the air to see the goal that is ahead (without telling the
subject that’s what you’re looking for). Often, the client will report a beach or park on the
horizon. That which is directly in front is what’s keeping him from achieving that. Have the
subject float back down into the chair.

Your number one goal is to ensure there’s a clear way for the subject to get from where he is
to the horizon. Make sure there is a way around obstacles, via roads or paths. Alternately,
the object can sometimes be removed. You might need to build bridges to get to the
horizon.

Remember: A little bit goes a very long way! Changes can resonate for days or even weeks
after MINDSCAPING.

Here are some of the objects a client may report:

‣ Buildings, including factories, castles, apartment blocks, houses, churches, etc.
‣ Roads, paths and trails
‣ Natural structures, including forests, fields, orchards, rivers and waterfalls. (Mike has
often found hidden caves behind waterfalls!)
‣ Mines, gold, gemstones, and other treasures.

Basic Rules and Principles

‣ Do a little, not a lot!
‣ Think in terms of life, nature, and beauty when you make changes.
‣ If the subject makes a huge shift (destroying an evil looking building, etc.) put a
monument there to secure the change and preserve the learnings.
‣ Never just take away. Always replace whatever negative structures or features you
remove with something more ecological.
‣ Remember to ask: How does that make you feel? If the client doesn’t like the shift,
have her reverse it or otherwise improve it.
‣ Stay above ground!
‣ If you are unable to remove a particularly nasty area (Chernobyl, swamps, debris
fields, wastelands, cemetery’s, etc.) then make it inaccessible by fencing it off and
adding a Keep Out sign. Give instructions that it will decay and turn to dust in time,
leaving a section of fresh greenery.
‣ Always calibrate the client. Keep watching and listening. Make notes as you go.
‣ If you must remove a structure, do it ecologically. Don’t use wrecking balls, dynamite
or bulldoze buildings. It’s far better to have them age rapidly and disintegrate and turn
to dust, which then blows away. If you decide not to replace it, then leave the marks
on the ground as a reminder and to preserve the learnings. Sometimes you can leave
a photograph or painting in place of a particularly bad structure.
‣ Continue to calibrate and check ecology as you go, by asking How does that make
you feel? after each change.
‣ Use your Ericksonian skills by maintaining rapport and offering back language as you
go.
‣ Don’t bark orders and instructions at your subject. Offer options and possibilities,
such as: Would you like to put some sort of fence around that structure? Ultimately,
the client decides what works for them, regardless of how you feel about it. You
cannot bully or force their unconscious mind.

7

‣ Monuments are the keys to maintaining change. When the person’s face flushes or
you see other signs of integration, point it out and have them put a plaque or other
monument in place to remind the unconscious that the huge shift has happened and
is permanent.
‣ Sometimes you can change buildings without removing them, by shrinking them or
slightly moving them to the side. Generally though, it’s better to work around
structures, rather than shoving them to the side.
‣ Keep calibrating and checking ecology as you go!
‣ Don’t move the person into the future part of the map. You need to remove obstacles,
but they will get there on their own, in due time.

Key Point

Your job is to facilitate the subject moving from where they are to where they want to be, on
the distant horizon. To this end, you’ll remove obvious blockages, and smooth the way. Don’t
make it too easy though. If you attempt to flatten all mountains and make all roads
completely straight, the unconscious will likely rebel against your changes. We all need
challenges to overcome!

The Binocular Technique

Sometimes, the subject will express distaste or concern about something they perceive. Tell
will report that they don’t like the way it makes them feel. Remember to ask: What does that
remind you of? This will often provide key information. In any case, the binocular technique
provides a way for the client to examine an unpleasant map feature, while reminding them
that they are far away from it.

To use the binocular technique, instruct the client to hold his hands up to his face as though
he’s looking through binoculars. Tell him that he will be able to perceive the structure clearly,
without getting close to it. Always use the virtual binoculars from the safety of the chair.
Remember to preframe that the subject is entirely safe and will be able to examine the object
without stress or concern by staying at a safe distance.

Trauma and Looking Back

If a person has gone through recent trauma - a car accident, divorce, loss of their job, etc.,
you will find evidence of it behind them, if they haven’t adequately dealt with it yet. About
90% of the time you’ll only be working with what’s directly in front of the client. Remember:
Less is more! Sometimes though, if you’re not getting the shifts you want, you may need to

8

MIKE MANDEL HYPNOSIS ACADEMY

have them imagine that they rotate and face the past, so their unconscious can indicate what
they still need to deal with.

You may find strange things offered by the unconscious, such as a wildfire burning, a
building in disrepair, unusual objects, etc. You must co-operate with their unconscious to
gently and ecologically clear up whatever past issues their mind is offering. You do this
exactly the same way you change what’s in front of them, recognizing that these are past
events and situations that still have a hold on the subject. Always calibrate and check
ecology as you go. Remember to replace nasty things with beautiful things and monuments
that preserve the learnings. Only change as much as you need to, and leave everything else
in place. Use the binoculars if you need to.

Ending the Session

Always do a clean-up! At the end of the session, reiterate all the wonderful changes that
have been made and will continue to resonate and continue to improve. Use your own words
here. Just ensure you remind the person of the changes that have been made and will
continue over time. Remind them of how good they feel.

Reverse the procedure by having the client take 3 deep breaths and open their eyes. Say:
Wide awake now!

You’re done.

Stick with the method and follow the steps. Always think ecology first! You now have an
incredible tool to change a person’s inner and outer world.

Homework
This has been a comprehensive lesson, and you now have the ability to do basic
MINDSCAPING. This is hypnotic, even though no hypnosis is ever mentioned. Your
homework is to find someone who wants to be Mindscaped and see what comes up in their
internal world. It will amaze you!
