The Peacock and The Crane
Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful peacock in the forest. The
peacock was very proud of its beauty. It would always flaunt its beautiful
feathers and make fun of other birds. In a nearby lake he kept on looking on
his own reflection in the clear water and said, “Oh! What a beautiful bird I
am! Look at my colorful tail.”
One day, the peacock met a crane on the bank of a lake. He said to
the crane with a sneer “Look at my beautiful tail feathers. Don’t I have the
most beautiful feathers among the birds’ feathers? What have you got to
compare with this? I am dressed in all the glory of rainbow. I am draped like
a King, in gold and purple. My feathers have fine colors and they shine in all
the colors under the sun.” The peacock felt majestic for its beautiful feathers
and he would always feel pride to show up his feathers. He would always
look at his feathers and admire it. He was very proud of his beauty.
“What a colorless bird you are! You have no beautiful and colorful
feathers like I do. I feel so sorry for you, for you have so dull and pale
feathers, and your feathers are as grey as the dust.”
The crane agreed and instantly reply, “Yes, you, you are beautiful. But I
don’t envy you at all” said the crane.
“What? How can you ignore a handsome bird like me? Don’t lie!” said
the peacock surprisingly.
“I can fly up in the sky with my wings. I travel around the world and
go wherever I want. All you can do is strut about on the ground. Fine
feathers alone don’t make fine birds. Now, can you fly, peacock?” said the
crane and soared up into the blue sky. The peacock was ashamed and kept
quiet.
