Introduction

These pages provide the user with an introduction to Pegasystems' PegaWorks software. They
will guide you through the basic rules and commands that you will need to build workflow
configuration.

PegaWorks Architecture¶
The Pegasystem can run on a variety of platforms and operating systems. The rule files are
divided into two contexts usually called the Pegasys Environment and the Resource
Environment. The Pegasys context communicates with the operating systems and acts like a
gateway into the system. Mainframe printing and logon security are set up in the Pegasys
environment. Most operators do not have access to the Pegasys environment, they simply pass
through it.

PegaWorks Terminology¶
Case Id/Workitem Id
Each case has a unique ID which is made up of a sequential number followed by the date, e.g.
0010-21JAN08

Case/Work Item
A case or workitem is an electronic folder which contains all the information pertaining to the
query or complaint. For example, the customer’s name, type of query, date and time. Cases can
also contain links to images such as scanned documents and voice recordings.

Worklist
A Worklist is a list of cases or workitems that belong to an individual. These are open cases
waiting to be worked on.

Workbasket
A workbasket is a list of cases or work items that belong to a group or department; a bit like a
departmental in-tray.

Audit Trail Any activity performed on a case is automatically stored in the audit trail. It records
who did what and when. The audit trail cannot be altered and can be easily reported on.

Clipboard
The Pegasystem’s clipboard is a temporary storage area in memory which is available to all users
and all processes. Information transferred in from external systems or waiting to be transferred
out can be held in the clipboard. Data on the clipboard can also be viewed and manipulated.

Status
A work items have a status. This allows you to track the progress of a case from entry to
completion. Status in the Pegasystem start with one of the following:
I – for in process
P - for pending
R – for resolved.

You can create your own statuses to match the business requirements. For example PRESP for
pending a response from the customer or RCOMP for resolved and completed.

Point
A point is an area within the organisational hierarchy where work can be done or data reported
on.

Security Group
All operators are assigned a security group which can limit what actions an individual is allowed
to perform
