Course Objectives 1. Read and demonstrate comprehension of a selection of passage taken
from real-world business situations, identify specific expressions and their
functions , and guess the meaning of sub- technical vocabulary in context.

2. Produce written work at defined competency level. The participants will


write extended paragraph compositions in a vocational style.

3. Listen and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of sources at defined


competency level (intermediate to upper-intermediate level). The
participants should apply these listening skills to passages taken from the
field of business of varying length.

4. Display speaking skills at defined competency level. The participants will


apply their speaking skills to a variety of lectures taken for the purposes of
business and general tasks and situations.

5. Use the patterns and the rules of English grammar to produce


grammatically complete and correct sentences independently.

Course Content It is an integrated-skill course that improves the participants' proficiency in
English, with the main emphasis on building up a sound grammatical base
and the ability to communicate socially for the purposes of business, both
orally and in writing. The four skills (listening, speaking, writing, and
reading) are emphasized. It introduces sub-technical vocabulary and the
basic language functions used in the language of business. Topics to be
covered include Company Structures, Retailing, Franchising, Banking,
Business and the Environment, and Company Performance.

* Identify some basic language functions, e.g. describing types of
Learning companies, responsibilities in a company, and jobs.
* Show understanding of lexical and discourse cohesion.
Outcomes * Identify text layout: introduction, supporting paragraphs, and
conclusion to help identify main idea of passage and each paragraph
* Demonstrate knowledge of information displayed in charts,
illustrations, and timetables for the purposes of business.
* Apply knowledge to a new real-world business situation.
* Take notes (using tables, charts and graphs).
* Recognize morphemic structure (roots, prefixes, and suffixes) of
words.
* Show knowledge of the grammar relevant to each text type (e.g.
imperative, present simple for description, present perfect when talking
about banks and employees.
*Identify meaning of some sub-technical and technical words.

 Writing Component

* Use the sub-technical vocabulary taught in reading in a correct way in


terms of semantic content, grammatical function, and morphological
structure.
* Write topic and supporting sentences.
* Indicate logical relations by using transitions (connectives).
* Use language features and grammar appropriate to write a letter of
application, an e-mail message, a memo, a business plan, a report and
minutes of a meeting.
* Group ideas logically and thematically in an extended paragraph of
specific types in the particular medium being used (e.g. description of
exports).
* Edit and revise the texts they produce.

 Listening Component

* Identify main ideas and specific details of 3 to 6-minute lectures on


topics of business nature.
* Take notes using symbols and abbreviation.
* Identify lecture layout (introductions, body, conclusions).
* Identify expressions of personal opinion, negotiations , interviews, and
agreement and disagreement.
* Demonstrate understanding of the grammar relevant to text type.

* Participate in business discussions.


* Use appropriate expression to propose ideas, express beliefs, agree,
disagree, persuade people, and negotiate a bank loan.

 Grammar Component

* Produce basic English sentences (S + V + (O)).


* Use the verb tenses correctly.
* Identify present simple and past simple.
* Produce questions and negatives using present perfect and past tense.
* Form and use passive voice.
* Identify and use modals.
* Use conditionals.
* Identify relative clauses.
* Identify conjunctions.
