PROCEDURE CHECKLIST

Chapter 22: Removing and Caring for Contact Lenses

Check (9) Yes or No

PROCEDURE STEPS Yes No COMMENTS

1. Instills 1–2 drops of wetting solution.
2. Removes lenses gently, using finger pads, not fingernails.
3. Cleanses, rinses, and places the first-removed lens in its
designated cup before removing the second lens.
4. Cleans and stores lenses in sterile solution; uses saline if
lens solution is not available.
5. Cleans lenses according to instructions on the cleansing
solution bottle.
6. Rinses after cleansing, with contact lens solution or
sterile saline.
7. Places lenses in lens case with soaking solution or sterile
saline.
8. Uses marked container to store lenses, or marks the
container “L” and “R” to identify the correct eye.
Removing Hard or Gas Permeable Lenses
9a. If the lens is not centered over the cornea, places finger
on the lower eyelid and applies gentle pressure to move it
into position.
9b. Places index finger at the outer corner of the eye and
gently pulls sideways toward the ear; positions other hand
below the eye to “catch” the lens.
9c. Asks the patient to blink. As the skin tightens, the
contact will “pop” out.
Alternatively:
9d. Gently pulls top eyelid up and lower lid down so they
are beyond the top and bottom edges of the lens.
9e. Then gently presses the lower eyelid up against the
bottom of the lens; when lens is slightly tipped, moves the
eyelids together.
Removing Soft Contact Lenses
10a. Holds the eye open with the nondominant hand.
10b. Gently places tip of index finger on the lens and slides
it down off the pupil into the white area of the eye.
10c. Using thumb and index fingerpads (gloved), gently
pinches the lens and lifts it straight up off the eye.
