Assignment 2

This document contains instructions for Assignment 2 in the course EECB353 Communication Systems for the semester of January 2018. It includes two questions with multiple parts each. Question 1 involves modulation techniques like ASK, FSK, BPSK and calculating baud rate, bandwidth, and modulation index. It also involves suggesting a technique to increase data rate while maintaining baud rate. Question 2 involves multiplexing input signals using PCM-TDM and calculating total transmission bit rate, and determining the maximum number of PCM signals that can be supported within a 10 MHz bandwidth.

EECB353 COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS | SEM 2 1718

ASSIGNMENT 2
SUBMISSION DATELINE: 19th JANUARY 2018 (5pm)

QUESTION 1 (FE SEM 1 16/17)

(a) Digital input data with bit length of 0.001 msec is to be transmitted on a radio link with a carrier
frequency of 800 MHz.
(i) If amplitude shift keying is deployed, find the baud rate and minimum bandwidth
required.
(ii) If frequency shift keying is used with carrier swing of 2 MHz, determine the modulation
index and minimum bandwidth required.

(b) XYZ Technology Sdn Bhd offers a communication system service with 5 Mbaud using BPSK
modulation. However, due to high demand from end users, the company is planning to increase
the data rate to 20 Mbps, while maintaining the baud rate. Suggest a technique to meet this
demand. Present your suggestion using calculations.

(c) 4 Mbaud data stream is modulated using QPSK technique. The QPSK modulator that utilizes
𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑤𝑐 𝑡 as reference carrier and -900 phase shift network. Develop the truth table and phasor
diagram of this QPSK modulator.
(i) Compare the performance of the above QPSK system with 8-QAM system in terms of
required bandwidth and data rate. Assume both systems have similar baud rate. Decide
which system performs better and find the SNR required for maximum data rate.

QUESTION 2 (FE SEM 2 16/17)

(a) The following 4 input signals are multiplexed together using PCM-TDM technique:
Input A: 110 kbps Input B: 256 kbps
Input C: 4 kHz Input D: 11.5 kHz
The analog signals are sampled at 2 times higher than the Nyquist theorem. Then, they are
quantized and encoded using 8-bits. Determine the total transmission bit rate of the multiplexed
PCM-TDM system.

(b) An analog signal of 10 kHz is converted to PCM signal, with minimum SQR of 35 dB.
Determine the maximum number of PCM signals that can be supported by the broadband cable
of 10 MHz bandwidth. Show calculations and state any assumption made.
