Electrical Network Analysis: Natural Response of First Order RC and RL Circuit

This document provides the procedure for examining the natural response of first order RC and RL circuits. The objective is to observe the behavior of voltages and currents over time in these circuits when there is no external excitation. The time constant is defined as the time required for the response to decay to 36.8% of the initial value. The procedure involves drawing circuits in Multisim software, placing an oscilloscope across components, calculating voltages using equations, and comparing manual calculations to simulation results. Four parts involve calculating voltages or currents over time in different RC and RL circuits where switches open or close at time t=0.

Natural Response of First Order RC and RL Circuit

Objective
To examine the response of first order RC and RL circuits
Equipment Required
A computer with MultiSim13.0 installed in it.

RESUME OF THEORY
The Natural response of a circuit refers to the behavior (in terms of voltages and currents) of the
circuit itself, with no external sources of excitation. The Time Constant (tau) of a circuit is the time
required for the response to decay to a factor of 1/e or 36.8 percent of initial value. Its unit is “Sec”.

PROCEDURE:
• Draw the circuit on Multisim.
• Place the oscilloscope across the inductor and capacitor.
• For inductor find the voltage by using V=L di/dt.
• Manually calculate the voltage at (t=0) and then at (t=tau).
• Now check the result on the simulation.
Part 1
The switch in the circuit has been closed for a long time, and it is opened at t=0. Find v(t) for t≥0.

Part 2
If the switch in the following circuit opens at t=0, find v(t) for t≥0

Part 3
The switch in the following circuit has been closed for a long time. At t=0 the switch is opened.
Calculate i(t) for t≥0.

Part 4
In the following circuit, find i(t) for t≥0. Assuming that the switch was open for a long time
