Introduction

‘The mob was going crazy; we were not even able to step out of our houses. I was scared as I was at my
friend’s place and my parents were constantly trying to reach me’, said Ankita when asked about how
she felt about the turmoil that went down in Panchkula last week. 38 people were killed and 100s were
injured in the rampage post the conviction of Guru Ram Rahim. The convicted MSG star has been
charged with 2 rape cases and has been sentenced to 20 years in jail.

What happened on 25th August?

When the whole city was being burnt down by Guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s furious followers, this
brave IAS officer, Gauri Parashar Joshi saved the whole city. According to the media reports, she along
with one PSO was trying to calm down the agitators when they turned violent and readily attacked her.
The local police displayed utmost lack of courage, left her in between the chaos to fend for her own life.
She was cut; she was bruised and burnt, while the enraged mob attacked her with stones and lathis, as
reported by Economic Times. She was few amongst those who stood up in those difficult times. This
mother of an eleven-year-old tackled the storm of violence courageously and when things turned
extremely ugly, she called up the army for help. Even with the army on the ground, she made sure that
the rioters had dispersed and left for home only around 3 in the morning.

Gauri, and her personal life

In the highly patriarchal state of Haryana, Gauri is an inspiration to thousands. She is 2009 batch IAS
officer of Odisha cadre. She worked in Kalahadi, Naxal affected area in Odisha for two years before she
got transferred to her home state, Haryana. She was appreciated for her groundwork in policy and
planning in Kalahadi. Gauri comes from a well-off family. Her father, R.N. Parashar has worked as the
Chief Advisor of Bhupinder Singh Hooda. She did her schooling in Delhi and had a childhood dream of
working as a journalist. After her graduation, she joined the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in
New Delhi. Post that, she decided to appear for Civil Services Exam in 2008 and secured 60th rank.
Gauri’s husband Ajit Joshi is also an IAS officer of Haryana Cadre. She has quite a reputation in the
Haryana administration and is presently working with Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA).
