FINGER-TO-NOSE TEST
Definition:
The finger to nose test is an evaluation of upper limb coordination and proprioception, often
performed to assess the integrity of the cerebellum.
Test procedure:
The patient is instructed to touch his/her nose and then without delay touch the examiners
extended finger and again touch his/her own nose. This sequence is repeated for a period.
During the test the examiner should always be sitting/standing in the same position within easy
reach of the patient but the examiner should move his/her finger to alternate positions in front
of the patient
Test findings (Positive & Negative results):
Hypermetria (Overshoot) indicates potential cerebellar disorders. There may be other clinical
signs implicating co-ordination, joint position sense and dyspraxia.
Considerations:
The reliability of a cerebellar test is re-enforced by performing other tests, please see Ataxia
Testing. Note that the patient may have difficulty performing this test if there is a visual deficit.
