Visual Olympian
Joe Datuin is an international Filipino visual
artist and sculptor with over 40 years of
experience in artmaking. He studied Fine
Arts from the University of Santo Tomas in
Manila, the oldest university in Asia.

In 2002, he was granted an artist’s residency
and scholarship at the Vermont Studio
Center, Vermont, USA.

He is based in Manila, Philippines.

Joe is known in the Philippines for


his Fusion Art, a style
characterized by utilizing a range
materials, and forms combined to
make a cohesive whole.

Joe has been commissioned by the Philippine
Government and major private organizations to create
art that will celebrate the heritage of institutions that
are shaping the lives of the Filipino people.
DANCING RINGS and MOSAIC MURALS
PHILIPPINE NATIONAL PARK | MANILA | 2011

Joe was commissioned by the Philippine


National Parks Development Committee in
2011 to create two (30 foot) monumental
sculptures, and four (size) mosaic murals To
immortalize the country’s winning of the Grand
Prize at the International Sport and Art Contest
during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

To complement the monumental
sculptures and mosaic paintings,
Joe was again commissioned by
the Philippine’s National Parks

National Park in Manila.

EUREKA SERIES Joe exhibited his Eureka series, noted for its geometric

Joe mounted a month-long solo


exhibition-for-a-cause titled “Infinity +” at
the Solaire Resort and Casino Manila
featuring his Fusion style works. Part of
the proceeds were dedicated to
rehabilitation efforts for a war-torn city in
a faraway island in the Philippines.

2018 | INFINITY SERIES Inspired by the relevance of
the Infinity symbol and the
Chinese Lunar New Year, Joe
fused geometric abstraction
and sculpture to interpret
luck and fortune in visual
imagery.

Paying tribute to Joe’s western influences in the visual arts, he created the Homage Series
which fused iconic modern, pop and contemporary western works with his signature ring
sculptures. The series was launched in a local commercial gallery.

For a collective exhibition in New York, Joe fused geometric planes of solid colors with
sculptural rings and spheres to interpret Filipino values.

In a solo exhibition of sculptures, Joe used metal
instead of paper to create creatures in origami. In
another show, he interpreted the countries he has been
using his Fusion style.

For the 2008 International Sport and Art Contest of
the Beijing Olympics, Joe created the “Dancing Rings”
an interpretation of the Chinese dragon and the flight
of the Olympic Spirit in stainless steel.

globes and bars to depict abstract

Amazed at the power of the line to convey his
advocacy of peace, Joe created a series of
monumental artworks that was exhibited in
local and international venues.

During his art residency at the Vermont Studio Center in the
USA, Joe created a series of cosmic-scapes on paper by
allowing the natural qualities of paint to create images
through resist techniques.

In 2004, Joe also produced a highly abstracted technique
of painting that formed multidimensional images by
playing on positive and negative space through
unconventional painting approaches.

Joe was commissioned by a local city


district in Metro Manila to design
their village parish altar. The output
was a stained glass wall inspired by
his Eureka Series . Apart from the
wall, Joe also designed the altar
table and lecterns which carried his
stainless steel fusion signature.

1998 | EUREKA SERIES
Wanting to break-away from figurative painting, Joe
returned to the formal elements of art to create dynamic
forms and shapes of primary colors on flat planes. The
result was his “Eureka series”. The colors eventually evolved
to include a range of hues, effects and textures.

1992| EQUINE SERIES
In his search for a style that will identify him in the local art scene, he chose to paint
images of horses, auspicious creatures in Asian belief and tradition. Also, during this
time, horse racing was a popular sport and form of entertainment in the Philippines.

Among Joe’s earliest works is the Diamond Series, which
combined figurative elements with non-representational
forms, shapes and textures. The artwork below won in
Citibank Manila’s art contest in 1977.

Joe’s earliest works are figurative. He painted a range of subjects and landscapes that are
mostly inspired by rural life in his hometown - Pangasinan city, a provincial city outside
Metro Manila known for its fishing industry.

locally and internationally by a number of agencies in

GRAND PRIZE
INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (IOC)
LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND | 2008
Joe won Grand Prize in the Sculpture category of the IOC’s Sport and
Art Contest held in Lausanne, Switzerland, besting 35 countries. The
contest was part of the festivities of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Ani ng Dangal award is a state recognition given by
the NCCA under the Office of the President of the Republic
of the Philippines. Joe received the award in an annual
