PART – B (5 x 12 = 60)
Answer All the Questions
11. Explain with neat sketch thermo syphon water cooling system
and also write their advantage and disadvantages.
(or)
12. Discuss in detail design variables and operating variables
affecting performance and emissions of a vehicle.

13. Draw a performance curve for driving force against vehicle

speed.
(or)
14. A motor car weighs 17795 N including the four road wheels each
of which has an effective diameter of 0.66 m, a radius of gyration
of 0.28 m and a weight of 294 N has an engine developing 66 kw
at 2400 rpm. The parts which rotate at engine speed weigh 1069
N, with a radius of gyration of 0.115 m. The transmission
efficiency is 90% and the total road and air resistance at this
engine speed in top gear of 3.84:1 is 873 N on level. Calculate
the acceleration in m/s2, under those conditions and assuming the
acceleration to be uniform the time required to increase the speed
by 32 km/h.
15. Explain the air resistance, rolling resistance and gradient
resistance.
(or)
16. Calculate and plot the curve for the torque and mechanical
efficiency of a vehicle motion at different speed.

17. Derive the expression for the Bore and Stroke length of an
engine.
(or)
18. By using relevant drawing explain the procedure to find the
velocity, Acceleration and inertia forces.

19. A motor vehicle weighs 7975.5 N and its engine develops 14.7
kw at 2500 rpm. At this engine speeds the road speed of the car
on the top gear is 64.37 km/h. Bottom gear reduction is 3.5:1 and
the efficiency of transmission is 88% on top 80% on bottom gear.
The diameters of tyres is 0.762 m and the projected frontal area
of the vehicle is 1.116 m2. The coefficient of air resistance is
0.0314 N - h2/km2-m2. R=KAV2, where R is resistance in N, K is
the coefficient resistance. Calculate: (a) Speed of car on bottom
gear (b) Tractive effort available at the wheels on top and bottom
gear (c) Gradient which car can climb on bottom gear.
(or)
20. Determine the gear ratios of a four speed gear box for a vehicle
of weight 13341.6 N. powered by an engine giving 20.6 kw
at 1800 rpm. The vehicle has frontal area of 2.23 m 2 and has a
wheel dia 0.71 m. The maximum Gradient that the car has to
negotiate is 1 in 4.The tractive resistance may be taken as 50 N
per 2240 N of the car. The wind resistance is given by
0.03679AV2. Assume that transmission efficiency is 0.75% and
that at top gear, the car is expected to go over a grade of 1in 40.
