 1:  CASE  STUDY

CATERING  MANAGEMENT  SYSTEM  PROJECT

Black   Hat   Catering   Pty   Ltd   is   a   regional   catering   company   that   typically   hosts
larger   catering   based   events   such   as   weddings,   funerals,   club   gatherings   and
large  birthday  parties.  They  have  been  doing  only  marginally  well  in  recent  years
but  not  good  enough  so  Ms  Smith,  the  owner,  decided  about  6  months  ago  it  is
time  to  expand  and  employed  a  new  event  manager.  The  event  manager  is  called
Nicola  and  she  has  been  bringing  in  new  business  from  all  angles.  This  is  causing
lots  of  new  revenue  but  at  the  moment  also  a  lot  of  chaos!

They   suddenly   realized   that   they   need   to   streamline   their   business   because   they
now   have   3   different   suppliers   for   cakes   –   Cakes   Galore,   Cake   Queen   and   Best
Cakes   competing   for   their   business   and   they   can’t   keep   up   with   all   the   paper
work   this   is   generating.   Not   to   even   mention   the   pastry   guys,   the   fruit   and   veg
suppliers   and   suddenly   the   Food   Hygiene   people   are   taking   notice   of   them!
Orders   with   suppliers   are   getting   missed   and   bookings   with   customers   are
sometimes  double  booked  which  causes  staff  to  be  very  unhappy  with  having  to
work  overtime!

They   are   also   now   serving   the   Ascot   Race   Club,   the   Rest   Well   Nursing   Home   and
all   their   existing   clients.   Their   staff   numbers   has   increased   so   the   HR   Manager,
Mr   Grudge   have   been   complaining   that   he   unable   to   keep   track   of   who   is
working   when,   especially   with   the   temporary   staff.   Recently   there   was   an   article
in  the  local  newspaper  of  ‘the  other’  event  company,  Blue  Ribbon  catering  who
won  a  Industry  award…this  really  got  to  Ms  Smith!

They  need  a  proper  Catering  Management  System  according  to  everyone…
