Media is a powerful tool in shaping ideologies and opinions, especially these days;

Yes, media is a powerful tool that shapes the ideology and opinion of the
media consumers, socially and politically.

However I am against that media should be given total freedom in Pakistan at

least, as Pakistan’s electronic media, and most of the print media as well, are
owned primarily by most wealthy individuals; and due to the vast extent of the
manipulation of the media under the sway of business interests, it has failed to
accurately portray the real nature of political, societal and economic problems
to the public, playing instead the subservient role of a propaganda machine for
elite interests of top political parties in Pakistan.

Today, democracy and liberal development are interdependent with

recognition by media. In an informed democracy, public reasoning based
opinion is a vital aide for transparent governance. It is an age of advancement
in communication technology where Internet, push button publishing, news
and views getting blogged up have an important role in making up mindsets.
However, media in Pakistan seems to be suffering from perceptual poverty,
information corruption, manipulations of facts with a twisted approach to
provoke chaos, confusion and democratic crisis. The federation of Pakistan
that is dependent on peaceful co-existence, democracy and equality is
weakened by such unhealthy media approach.

Today, we are lagging behind the modern world where scientific and political
advancements are nurturing the society; we are not able to educate our
masses with the global perspective of threats we are facing. We are being bled
to death by terrorism, our social fabric is tattered and the barbarians are taking
the future of our children in their hands, but we can’t unify against extremism
due to the simple fact that our media is dividing and causing conflicts in our
society for the sake of their business interests.

It would be more than true to say that as a society we are worst victim of
intellectual corruption; unprofessional and unethical means of analysis by
media pioneers has disintegrated the political and social process. Just by
showing disturbing scenes, dying bodies and bloodshed does not full-fill the
cause of reporting. Pakistan’s predominantly right wing media’s hostile
propaganda against politicians and misrepresentation of information
has served as a breeding ground for extremist aberrations in the society.

There is no effective citizen-oriented responsible journalism to transform the

citizens into active and effective citizens. The need of the hour is to modernize
news process with more emphasizes upon developing humane, democratic
and scientific approach among viewers and readers instead of stuffing them
with hatred against politicians and parliament. Only then we as a nation can
develop our identity as a rationale nation that would ensure much needed
peace and prosperity. Media needs to frame a code of conduct and strictly
adhere to it and should build intellectual safeguards against extremism
instead of becoming tool for its own economic and political promotion. The
media should understand the difference between “Breaking News” And
“Breaking Nation”.
