Design and Development of Mini Sugarcane Harvesting Machine (Tractor Mounted)

This document summarizes a student project to design and develop a mini sugarcane harvesting machine that is tractor mounted. The objectives were to create an affordable machine suitable for Indian cultivation habits in response to the problems of high labor costs and shortages. Key aspects included a design that performs whole stalk harvesting, cutting of bases and tops, and de-trashing with a single attachment mounted on a tractor that can operate in rows spaced 3.5-4 feet apart. A prototype was developed and testing showed it reduced costs and labor dependence for farmers.

INTRODUCTION
Sugar industry ranks second amongst major agro-based industries in India. Cane harvesting is the
most challenging agricultural operation which demand considerable amount of labour. Before the
mechanical harvesting systems came into existence, canes were harvested manually using hand
knives. This conventional method still continues in large scale in developing countries like India.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The existing harvesting technology in India is either expensive or not suitable for Indian
cultivation habits. In the manual harvesting systems, labour dependency is high as there is
shortage of labours in the nation. Due to high demand the gangs either cheat the farmers or run
away taking advance payment from them. Therefore, a portable sugarcane harvesting machine
has to be developed which is affordable and suitable for Indian cultivations habits.
OBJECTIVES
To design and develop a mini
sugarcane harvesting machine (tractor
mounted) which is suitable for Indian
cultivation habits.
KEY DATA USED
1. Harvesting Requirements
2. Budget Calculations
3. Existing technologies

METHODOLOGY

KEY PROPOSALS & FINAL DELIVERABLES

1. Design of mini sugarcane Harvesting machine.
2. Development of the machine.
3. Reduced cost of machine and labour dependency of farmers.

RESULTS / OUTCOMES

1. A mini sugarcane harvesting machine

(tractor mounted) which is cost effective &
suitable for Indian cultivation habits is obtained.
2. The cost of the mini sugarcane harvesting
3. machine is estimated to be Rs. 1.5 lacs +
7lacs (tractor price).

INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THE PROJECT

1. Whole Stalk cane harvesting mechanism where

base cutting, tops cutting & de-trashing
2. operations of sugarcane are performed by only
one attachment mounted on tractor.
3. Suitable for 3.5-4 feet cane to cane gap width.
4. Steering system is given in both directions of
tractor where driver seat is rotatable.

FUTURE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

1. The cane can be grabbed and dumped

automatically adding necessary components
to the attachment.
2. The harvesting operation, transportation and sugar production processes can be
monitored through real time data, which connects the entire process by building a supply
chain eco system.
3. IIOT can be applied to make the machine smarter, which gives the count of cane
harvested per unit time.
