ACKNOWLEDGEMNTS

We would like to express our gratitude to our parents for supporting us financially. I

also want to give thanks to our teacher, Paula Marie for the help and guidance in

completing our research paper. Lastly, to God, for giving us brilliant minds in order to

come up with great ideas in our investigatory project.

ABSTRACT

The title of our Investigatory Project is Aloe Vera and Orange Peel as Sanitizer.

These days people are really prone to diseases just by simply touching a dirty thing,

and commonly, our hands are particularly one of the suspects on why we usually has

germs in our body that sometimes causes us to be ill, that’s why our group decided to

make an Aloe Vera Sanitizer. Aloe Vera gel has alleged to be useful for dry skin

conditions, cosmetic ailments, hair and scalp problems and many more. First we scrape

the gel out of the Aloe Vera so that our sanitizer would be sticky .We used Alcohol, Aloe

Vera Gel, and orange peel to make up to that sanitizer. We mixed all the materials and

then after that we stirred it and come up to a Aloe Vera and Orange Peel Hand

Sanitizer. Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer is more effective at killing microorganisms than

soaps. Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer helps us to kill germs and bacteria`s in our hands.

Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer will help us stay our hands clean and far from diseases that

can harm us and lead us to serious problems or even death.

CHAPTER I – INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Every day we use our hands to writing up a report, to open doors much more and

holding money. All this activities expose our hands to harmful germs and bacteria.

That’s why hand sanitizer was developed for those times when soap and water are not

available. Alcohol can be very drying to the skin, so most of brands of sanitizer also

contain moisturize to minimize skin dryness and irritation.

Anyone who has been in a child's play area has witnessed it. As the children

come off the play equipment, the mother searched into their purse to grab their hand

sanitizer. Each child gets a dab of sanitizer to rub into her hands in order to eliminate

the germs that have been transferred to her skin. The hope is that this practice will keep

the children, and therefore their families, healthier.

Hand sanitizers were invented by Lupe Hernandez, a registered nurse in

Bakersfield, California, in 1966. While Hernandez was studying to become a nurse, she

learned that cleaning alcohol can be delivered via a gel so that cleaning could occur

without a soap and water.

Hand sanitizer is helpful because it eliminates bacteria and germs, convenient to

carry, and valuable that is why the researchers come up to this project.
B. Statement of the Problem

1. Is the hand sanitizer effective in maintaining your hand clean?

2. What are the advantage and disadvantage in using the hand sanitizer?

3. Is it ok to put hand sanitizer on wounds?

C. Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be of great benefit to the following:

Students. The product made by the researcher will be of great help to the students for it

doesn’t have toxic chemicals and it is safe and ecofriendly also, it is affordable and easy

to make.

Community. This research will help the community to be ecofriendly as possible for it is

only made by the common plants we used to see in our neighbors, which are the

Orange (citrus sinensis.) and Aloe Vera (aloe barbandensis)

Future Researcher. The ideas presented may be used as reference data in conducting

new researches or in testing the validity of other related findings. This study will also

serve as their cross-reference that will give them a background or an overview of

Orange and Aloe Vera as Hand Sanitizer.

D. Scope and Limitations

The major concern of this study is only to produce an alternative product for hand

sanitizer. Also, its effectiveness upon killing germs.

E. Definition of Terms

Convenient- suited to personal comfort or to easy performance

Valuable- having desirable or esteemed characteristics or qualities

-having monetary value

Ecofriendly- not environmentally harmful

Chapter II - REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Elementary school absenteeism due to infection is significantly reduced when an

alcohol gel hand sanitizer is used in the classroom as part of a hand hygiene program.

(AJIC Am J Infect Control 2000;28:340-6)

This study indicates that use of an alcohol gel hand sanitizer can decrease

infection rates and provide an additional tool for an effective infection control program.

(Am J Infect Control 2002;30:226-33.)

Citrus is a common term and genus of flowering plants in the rue family,

Rutaceae. These plants are large shrubs or small trees, reaching 5-15 m tall, with spiny

shoots and alternately arranged evergreen leaves with an entire margin. The flowers

are solitary or in small corymbs, each flower 2-4 cm diameter, with five (rarely four)

white petals and numerous stamens; they are often very strongly scented

(Chelsea; 2013)

According to Stephanie Pollard (2018), aloe vera gel nourishes skin and prevents

chapping and cracking. You can also add various essential oils to give it a fresh scent in

making hand sanitizer

Hand sanitizer kills 99.9% of most common germs on hands in 30 seconds. It

also cleans hands without water or soap or towel. It is very convenient and handy to

use it anywhere. Hand sanitizer moisturizes your hands making it smooth and clean

according to Nihar H. ( 2012)

Hand sanitizers were developed for use after washing hands or for those times

when soap and water are not available. They are gels that contain alcohol in order to kill

the germs present on the skin. The alcohol works immediately and effectively in order to

kill bacteria and most viruses. By: Laina Shulman (2006)

Hand sanitizers are available in potable carrying devices that are easy to carry and

you can take them along anywhere you go. It contains alcohol and other agents that are

good for killing germs that can easily be transmitted. (By Justin Williamson)

Aloe Vera contains natural moisturizers that help retain moisture on dry and rough

skin. After you are finished sanitizing, the alcohol will evaporate off of your hand killing

the germs, and the Aloe Vera in our hand sanitizer will remain and form a protective

layer on your skin leaving it soft for you. (Jill Tilton, 2016)

One study examined the effects of using aloe vera against bacteria such as

Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and

Escherichia coli. The researchers found a “maximum growth suppression” on both the S.

aureus and S. pyogenes bacteria due to aloe veraDue to these germ fighting powers,

aloe vera makes for an excellent, sting-free hand sanitizer. (Legion Athletics, 2019)
Aloe vera is so handy since it is not an oil and should not leave hands feeling greasy.

It provides the right balance of moisture, proteins, and vitamins that those dry hands

have been screaming for. (Corium 21, 2019)

The chances to get ill decreases, the chances of infection reduces, it kills all bacteria

and micro-organisms from our hands, hand sanitizer is less likely to react or cause skin

infections, hand sanitizer are very portable to use, it is very handy to carry as

sometimes you won’t find sink and Water to wash hands, hand sanitizer makes skin soft

and smooth from becoming dry. (By GeekNoob - March 30, 2018)

One of the foremost benefits of hand sanitizer is just that: It sanitizes. These products

were designed to kill germs, and they get the job done. When used properly, hand

sanitizers can eliminate 99.9% of the germs on your hands.(SafeSpace Company,

2017)

We make a product which is rich in Vitamin E and can avoid some sickness, that can

help us in our daily lives and this is entitled as “ Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer”, we observe

that the more Aloe Vera Extract we put , the more healthier and effective. We chose the

70% Alcohol as the solute because when the Alcohol and Extract mixed, there’s a little

change in color but the nutritional substances of the Extract will maintain.” (StudyMode,

2013)
Did you know that most of the nutrition in the orange is located in the peel? Within the

orange peel of Citrus sinensis you’ll find vitamins B, C, and various flavonoids. When

we talk about the health benefits of the orange, the peel is where it’s at! (By Dawn

Combs)

Aloe vera gel is effective for hand sanitizer because it forms the base gel, and aloe is

very nourishing for the skin.(SARAH, 2019)

Aloe vera, just like coconut oil has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It also

keeps your skin soft and plump. Aloe vera makes a great base for hand sanitizer thanks

to its gel-texture.(The Indian Spot Page, 2019)

Research has shown the aloe vera extract can improve the skin’s ability to rehydrate

itself. Using aloe vera-based products can soften the skin without clogging your pores

as, unlike some moisturisers, it doesn’t leave behind a greasy layer of film after

use.(Faith in Nature)

Hand sanitizer cleans your hands much better than soap and water, so it reduces the

bacterial burden to a much greater extent than soap and water,’ he says. ‘And your

hands tend to stay cleaner longer than if you were to use soap and water.’

(James Scott 2009)

Using hand sanitizer reduces microbial counts and kills many harmful germs that

could infect workers with the flu and other viruses. In order to keep the workplace a

healthy and thriving environment, it’s critical that employers take into account the health

of its employees. Providing hand sanitizer for employees, at desks and in communal

areas, is just as essential as providing the right equipment and tools to do their job.(By

Isabelle Faivre March 13, 2018)

According to studies, 1 in 5 people don’t regularly wash their hands. Of those

who do, 70% don’t use soap. Providing hand sanitizer in key areas (including

bathrooms and kitchens) makes it more likely that people will use it to kill harmful

bacteria.(by Mark Brouwers,Oct26, 2016)

confident says that our investigatory project became successful.

CHAPTER VI - RECOMMENDATIONS

In analyzing and in the findings that we have known, we, the researchers, respectfully

recommend you some instructions for you to come up with a better result. . You should

put more Aloe Vera gel than rubbing alcohol to make your sanitizer condense and jelly.

And Make sure that the recycled bottles have been thoroughly cleaned in hot soapy

water and all traces of the other store bought stuff are gone. This just looks better to

have no mixture with the old and new ones.
