The document provides an introduction to circuit simulation using SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis), including what SPICE is, its history from its development at UC Berkeley in 1973, and its use of device models and analysis methods to simulate the performance of analog circuits through computer simulation. SPICE utilizes a modified nodal analysis approach and can be used for non-linear DC analysis, non-linear transient analysis, linear AC analysis, noise analysis, and temperature analysis.

Introduction
 Computer simulation of a circuit entails using a
computer to predict, or simulate, the performance
of a circuit or system.
 Many different type of computer programs are
used for simulations of integrated circuits,
depending on the types of analysis required and
size of circuit involved or designed.
What is SPICE
 It is short for 'Simulation Program with Integrated
Circuit Emphasis‘
 SPICE is open-source software that simulates the
operating conditions of analog circuits.
 The simulation program SPICE was selected because
of its long-term acceptance and use, as well as its
widespread availability to both industrial and
academic groups.
History of SPICE
 Developed by the University of California, Berkeley
in 1973, SPICE has undergone changes as shown in
the table below to reach its current format.
 The first version, SPICE1, was coded in FORTRAN.
 FORTRAN is a procedural programming language
developed for scientific computing.
 It facilitates optimization of parallel computing
operations to achieve faster processing speeds.

Device Model
 In Device model, device parameters are used to reprod
uce the actual element characteristics on a simulator.
 Elements and devices can be simulated:
 Passive components (i.e. resistors, capacitors, inductors)
 Active devices (e.g. diodes, bipolar transistors,
MOSFETs)
 Transmission lines
 Power sources
Contd…
 Analysis methods:
 Transient
 DC
 Small-signal AC
 Noise
 Until SPICE, IC design was carried out entirely by
hand.
Flowchart for operation of SPICE
Flowchart operations
 The subroutine READIN read the SPICE input file.
 ERRCHK verifies that the input syntax is correct.
 Temperature effects are handled in SPICE by
repeating the entire analysis for each temperature.
 DCTRAN and DCOP are used for dc transfer
characteristics, dc operating point calculations and
transient analysis.
 ACAN performs the small signal ac analysis.
Applications
 SPICE utilizes a modified nodal analysis approach.
 It can be used for-
 Non-linear DC analysis
 Non-linear transient analysis

 Linear AC analysis

 Noise analysis

 Temperature analysis, etc.
