MIDTERM EXAMINATION
ENGR-4011 RESISTANCE AND PROPULSION

Date: Friday June 11, 2010 Instructor: Brian Veitch

Time: 1:00 pm – 1:50 pm.

Attempt all questions. The value of each question is noted in square brackets. The total value of
the questions is 25. A formula sheet is provided. Please write neatly. Pass in the question sheet.

1. [10] The resistance of a (deeply submerged) model submarine was measured in a towing tank
for a series of constant test speeds. Turbulence stimulators were fitted to the model during the
tests. The results of five of the tests are shown in the table below.

Test Speed Resistance

# V (m/s) RT (N)

1 2.01 320
2 3.00 635
3 4.01 1078
4 4.99 1378
5 6.00 2167

Use these results to estimate the form factor of the submarine. The submarine model is a 1:20
scale version of a 120m long boat whose (full scale) wetted surface area is 8400m2. Be careful:
one of the measured resistance values in the table is spurious (inaccurate) due to an
instrumentation fault during a test. The water temperature in the tank was 15ºC during the
experiments. Show your work and state any assumptions you make.

2. Total resistance can be separated into two main components and subcomponents.

(a) [5] As a proportion of the total resistance, which of the following two ships would you
expect to have the greater viscous resistance component? Which of the two ships is the
better candidate for a bulbous bow? Provide clear justification of your answers.
(i) Ship 1: length L=232 m, breadth B=43 m, design speed V=14.5 knots
(ii) Ship 2: L=278 m, B=32.2 m, design speed V=25.5 knots

(b) [5] Consider the interference of the transverse bow and stern waves of ship 2 above when
it is at its design speed. Draw a simple sketch of profile of the ship with the transverse
bow and stern waves superimposed, showing how they will interfere.

3. [5] Explain the phenomenon of squat. Incorporate the role of fluid velocity and pressure in
your explanation.
